Day 16 of the Apex Adventurer Tournament

What Do We Have Here…

“Ugh,” Austin Bob groaned as he staggered to his feet from his bedroll. He looked down to see he had drooled a fair amount of blood onto his pillow during his sleep. “Great, that is just great.”

Austin Bob pulled off the pillow cover and made his way to the beach. “I’ll rinse off what I can and leave it out to dry during the day… oh, what do we have here… a little shark.”

He noticed a small shark swimming near shore searching for small fish to eat. Austin Bob quickly pulled his crossbow and fired it at the shark, hitting it square in the eye.

After carrying the shark back to Camp, Austin place it on a flat rock and proceeded to wake up the others.

“Hey, seriously, there better be a good reason you are waking me up,” Ixora said as she crawled out of her tent.

“Whoa, did you just catch that?!” Ana excitedly exclaimed as she pointed at the shark’s body.

Vikky walked over to Austin’s haul, “Must be about thirty pounds! This should feed us well for several meals, nice work!”

Vikky retrieved a small knife from her bag and volunteered to prepare some cuts to cook up.

Ajax and Ixora were able to quickly start a fire and cook up the day’s ration of potatoes as they waited for pieces of shark to roast. Within forty minutes the Pühl Party was feasting on the largest meal they had ever cooked at the Camp.

With a massive smile on his face Austin Bob said to the group, “Guess I am off the hook for any other chores today!”

After hearing the group’s halfhearted laughter, he added, “Kidding guys, I am glad we are all able to get a few good meals in.”

After their hardy meal, the Adventurers worked together to clean dishes, refill their water canteens and gather firewood for the day. After an hour of working around Camp, they agreed it was a good time to start relaxing and that any other chores could wait until after the Contest.

The moment Ajax sat down near the fire he noticed Geoff had appeared at the edge of their beach. “Uh, everyone, Geoff is here, look!”

The other Adventurers took notice of Geoff after Ajax’s announcement.

“Looks like the Contest might be right here, see how there are bows at the beach and platforms on the water?” Ana said.

The entire Party gathered their adventuring gear and made their way to Geoff.

Everything the Adventurers will need for the Contest, right at their beach

Proudly standing next to one of the archery stations, Geoff smiled as the Adventurers gathered on the red mat roughly thirty feet away from him.

“Today, as you can see, our Protection Contest will start with an archery competition.”

Geoff turned his back to the Adventurers and picked up a bow and arrow from the station he was standing at. As he took aim at the sky a target magically appeared over the ocean, roughly fifty out and thirty feet in the air. Geoff loosed the arrow, which passed through the bullseye of the target before plummeting into the water.

Vikky called out to Geoff, “Nice shot!”

Ajax followed up her comment, “And a creative use of illusory magic too.”

Geoff returned the bow to the archery station and returned his focus to the Adventurers. “You will compete by firing arrows at a target, which will progressively become harder as it appears farther away with each round. You get two attempts during each round, if you fail to score a hit during a round, you are eliminated. Ties will be broken by additional shots at the current target until the tie is broken. The final two Adventurers remaining in the archery competition will advance to the second stage of the competition.”

Ana gestured toward two wooden platforms in the water with an exasperated sigh, “I’m guessing there is more to this than the archery?”

Geoff smirked before continuing, “The finalists will move on to another round in which they will swim out to their platform and do combat against a creature. I will keep the identity of the creature a surprise for now.”

The Adventurers in near unison shouted, “Geoff!”

After a chuckle Geoff continued, “The first Adventurer to defeat their opponent will be the winner of Contest and earn the Shield of Protection.

“Before you each head to a station, Ixora, you had purchased an advantage in this competition from a traveling merchant, please go ahead and read the advantage aloud.”

Ixora unfurled the scroll she purchased, “Weird, when I opened it earlier it was blank… I’m glad I held onto it. Thought the skeleton tricked me.”

The other Adventurers shot glances at one another.

Ixora continued, “Congratulations on earning an Advantage in the Protection Contest of Day 16 of the Apex Adventurer Tournament. During the archery portion of the Contest you are granted a “re-do.” Should you be eliminated from the archery Contest you will immediately return to the Contest, this advantage only applies to you and only for your first elimination.”

The scroll Ixora was holding turned to black smoke which quickly dissipated. Geoff then said, “Alright, everyone head to your archery stations and we can get this Contest going.”

Each adventurer walked to their station and picked up their bow and quiver of arrows.

“Alright, the first target will be 25 feet out!”

All of the Adventurers except Ajax hit the target on their first shot. They watched with excitement as Ajax made his second attempt. As his arrow went through the outer edge of the target the others did their best to hide their disappointment.

“Nice job Ajax,” Ana said.

“Alright, let’s make things a little more difficult, 50 feet out!” Geoff announced.

The targets blinked away and reappeared farther in the distance. The Adventurers once again lined up their shots, this time only Vikky, Ana and Ixora hit their targets on their first attempt. Austin Bob and Ajax took aim and both missed once again.

“Gah, come on!” Austin Bob shouted in frustration, whereas Ajax sighed heavily.

Vikky smiled and looked over towards Ixora and Ana, “Just us ladies now!”

The three women cheered.

“Nice job, let’s go for 75 feet.” Geoff said as the targets once again moved farther out. This time only Vikky hit her target on her first attempt.

On the second shot Ana was able to hit the edge of her target, but Ixora missed.

“Dang, was hoping to get further before using up my advantage.” Ixora said with a look of frustration.

“Alright Ixora, you re-do is now used and you get two more shots at your target to try to stay in this.

Ixora took a deep breath and fired her third shot this round, her arrow flew straight through the bullseye.

“Yes! Although it would have been better if that was my first shot!”

“Let’s make this even more difficult, 100 feet out!”

Vikky, Ana and Ixora took careful aim at their targets. Ana and Ixora loosed their arrows first, both missing low. Vikky waited several more seconds before releasing her arrow, a bullseye. Ixora noticed that Vikky was waiting for something before she fired, as she was not adjusting her aim at all during the prolonged wait.

Ana and Ixora took aim once more, Ana fired first and once again fell short. Ixora held her aim until she noticed a pause in the breeze pushing through her hair, at that moment she fired her arrow and clipped the edge of her target.

“Well done Vikky and Ixora, you are the finalists for the archery portion of the Contest and will advance to the combat portion of the Contest. Go ahead and swim out to your platforms.”

Ixora walked over to Vikky and gave her a quick hug before heading into the water.

“Alright, give me a thumbs up when you are ready.” Geoff called out.

After both Vikky and Ixora signaled they were ready, a massive salamander jumped onto each platform. The salamanders were light pink in color, wearing scale mail armor and wield massive axes. Geoff had an excited look on his face and shouted out, “Each of you will be facing an Axe-A-Lotl!”

Both Vikky and Ixora opted to use daggers for this combat as the platforms were only twenty feet across, not leaving much room for ranged combat. Austin Bob, Ajax and Ana watched from the beach, wishing they had a better view. They could see Vikky and Ixora doing their best to dodge heavy axe swings as they waited for the right opportunities to get close to the massive salamanders and attack. For the first minute it was difficult to tell who was winning, as all four combatants were bleeding.

Ixora glanced over at Vikky’s platform for a moment, when she turned her focus back to her opponent it was too late as the Axe-A-Lotl drove its axe deep into her left thigh. Ixora cried out in pain as she collapsed onto the platform. The creature lifted its axe above its head and brought it down into Ixora’s left shoulder, knocking her unconscious.

Vikky didn’t let Ixora’s anguished shouts distract her, she continued to circle her opponent and after dodging a heavy axe swing she charged in to deliver two final strikes at its back. Vikky raised her arms and cheered in victory before noticing Ixora was collapsed on the other platform. Vikky quickly swam over to Ixora’s platform as both salamanders flashed a bright purple before disappearing.

Geoff teleported next to Ixora at the same time Vikky arrived, Geoff knelt down and placed his hand on Ixora’s. Their hands began to glow a light green, bringing her back to consciousness.  After Ixora awoke Geoff stopped healing her and disappeared to rejoin the rest of the party at the beach.

“Wow, are you ok?” Vikky asked as she helped Ixora to her feet.

“I’m alright. Is he seriously going to make us swim back?” Ixora replied, realizing they were on their own in the water.

The two casually swam back to shore and rejoined the group. “Congratulations Vikky on a dominating performance during both segments of today’s Protection Contest,” Geoff said as he handed her the Shield of Protection.

“Short trip back to Camp today, I’ll see all of you at Party Assembly tonight.” Geoff disappeared, leaving the group of five Adventurers at their beach. The Party agreed to rest at Camp for a bit before breaking apart to do some Camp chores and have strategic conversations.

As the group started to walk toward their Camp, Ixora cried out in pain as she limped forward. Ajax and Ana offered to carry her back to Camp. After some persuading Ixora relented and agreed to be carried to Camp.

“Thanks, guys. I’ll wrap up my wounds at Camp and I’ll be walking to Party Assembly on my own.” The others agreed and carefully carried Ixora to her tent.

Vikky knelt at the shore to rinse the blood off her hands, “I can’t tell if this is mine, Ixora’s or from that fish thing.”

Ajax replied, “They looked like Salamanders.”

Vikky rolled her eyes knowing Ajax couldn’t see. “Yeah, giant axe wielding salamanders or whatever.”

Austin Bob cut open several coconuts and handed one to each of the other Adventurers.

“Nice job Vikky, those things looked tough. Alright, let’s enjoy a refreshing drink, take a nap and then get on with the chaos before the Vote.”

The next hour at Camp was quiet, the Adventurers each resting and Ixora and Vikky tending to their wounds. Even though everyone was calm on the surface, the tension within the group was palpable.

Austin Bob stood up and began to gather empty canteens. “I’ll go fill these up, anyone want to stretch their legs?”

Both Vikky and Ana volunteered to help, leaving Ajax and Ixora back at Camp.

Ajax watched the trio walk out of earshot before heading over to Ixora. “Is it alright if I share my thoughts on the Vote?”

Ixora carefully sat up, “Go for it, I know I am going home anyway. They tried before and look at me, I cannot fight anything like this, I’m done.”

Ajax listened and waited several seconds after Ixora finished speaking before making a pitch, “I don’t know if you necessarily are getting voted out tonight. I need you to vote with me though for you to have a chance. Are you good with voting Austin Bob?”

Ixora laid back down, “I will vote for however you want if you think it keeps me in the Tournament.”

Ajax gently nodded his head, “Yes, I think vote for Austin Bob and tell them you are planning to vote for me.”

Ixora nodded in agreement before closing her eyes and resuming her nap.

Before filling their canteens, Austin Bob, Ana and Vikky found a shady spot to sit and discuss the upcoming vote.

Ana started the strategizing by saying, “I think we probably all agree that it has to be Ixora right? Ajax is a big Contest threat, but we crushed him today. Also, I don’t like that Ixora was able to get an Advantage and didn’t tell any of us. And there is no way she could win in the Forsaken Arena in her current state.”

Austin Bob and Vikky contemplated for a moment, but ultimately agreed with Ana’s plan. The three got up to make their way to a nearby well. As they stood up, Austin Bob asked if one of them should head back to keep an eye out on Ixora and Ajax. Both Ana and Vikky volunteered to head back.

“Uh, Vikky, do you want to head back? You won today, you earned a break from some chores,” Austin Bob said.

Vikky head back towards the Camp as Austin Bob and Ana continued on. “OK, this has been a long time coming, but we have been working together from when you found your Godsend at the beginning of this Tournament,” Austin Bob said to Ana.

“Uh, yeah, what did you have in mind. You don’t think we should get Ixora?”

Austin Bob replied, “We can, but I think this is a good time to Ajax. We could probably get Ixora to vote with us just so she stays in the game. And by leaving Vikky out of the plan it should be easy to get her next and make it harder for the Council of Judgment to award her the victory if she does make it to the end by winning Protection the rest of the way.”

Ana was surprised to hear Austin Bob’s plan. “Are you absolutely sure you want to betray Vikky?”

Austin Bob nodded, “I like Vikky a lot, but you and I have been working together from the beginning, there aren’t many of us left and I am playing to set us up so that one of us wins.”

Ana thought about the plan as they filled up the canteens. “Ok, let’s do it. It sets us up to have us and Ixora when we get to three and that sounds good to me.”

Ajax saw Vikky approaching in the distance, he loudly called out, “Hey Vikky, welcome back, where are the others?!”

Vikky sat down next to Ajax, “Hey, they are still getting the water. I decided to head back and check on how you and Ixora were doing.”

Ajax looked back at the tent then whispered to Vikky, “She is feeling pretty bad, between the severe injuries and thinking she is likely going home.”

Vikky slowly nodded, “Are you good with that? Her going home?”

Ajax silently nodded. Vikky stood up, brushed the sand off her pants and walked into the Ixora’s tent to keep her company.

Several minutes later Ana and Austin Bob returned to Camp and handed out canteens of cool water. The Adventurers spent the next hour resting in the shade. Austin Bob walked over to Ixora’s tent and offered to take over keeping Ixora company.

Ixora sat up as Austin Bob sat down next to her. Austin Bob whispered, “Hey, I am guessing you are concerned it is you, just letting you know we are going to go for Ajax… he wins Protection a lot, but didn’t today. I have enough votes pulled together for this, figured you would want to be on the right side of the vote.”

Ixora began to massage her forehead, “I am getting a headache, not sure if it is this game or the significant blood loss, ugh. OK, I am good with that, time for Ajax to go.”

The winds picked up as the sun began to set, the Adventurers gathered their Urns and started to slowly make their way to Party Assembly. Ixora’s fresh bandages began to stain red with her blood as she struggled forward while carrying her Urn.

As the Adventurers entered the Assembly Hall the members of the Council of Judgment were shocked to see how badly injured Ixora was as she staggered to her seat. Once everyone was seated Geoff addressed the group.

“I am both shocked and impressed Ixora, that you walked into Party Assembly without any assistance and carried your own Urn too. What a testament to the how each of you are such deserving contenders for the title of Apex Adventurer.”

Ixora smiled at the compliment, “Yeah, you still could have healed me up a bit more Geoff.”

Geoff chuckled before responding, “As you all know, this Tournament is designed to push you to your limits and unfortunately for you Ixora, the rules clearly state that all I could do for you today was to stabilize you and bring you back to consciousness.”

Ixora nodded, “Yeah, I was really hurting at first, but as I laid in my tent for a few hours I realized that is what I signed up for.”

”Alright, Pühl Party, let’s get into it! Since we are on the topic, Ixora let’s start with how the Protection Contest went for you.”

Ixora put her head in her hands, “Ugh, it started off pretty well. The Contest had two stages, Vikky, Ana and I dominated the first part, which was an archery competition. I had used an advantage I purchased to get a “re-do” during that first part which helped me advance to the second stage. Vikky crushed it and earned the other spot, because, you know, it was an archery competition and it is Vikky. The second stage went less well for me, got my butt kicked by a giant sea creature thing, what did you call it Geoff?”

“An Axe-A-Lotl.”

Ixora continued, “Yeah, those things are no joke, but Vikky was able to defeat hers and that is why she has the Shield tonight.”

Geoff looked to Vikky, “Anything you would like to add?”

Vikky shook her head no, “Ixora pretty much covered it. I will say I was concerned when I saw Ixora laying unconscious on the platform and am genuinely inspired by how she walked here and carried her own Urn in spite of her injuries.

Geoff nodded, “Yes, definitely impressive.”

Geoff then asked the group, “How are things at Camp? We are down to five, how is that affecting things?”

Austin Bob quickly replied, “You know Geoff, having fewer people around means we each have a little more work to do around Camp. It is also quieter, which makes the days go by a lot slower. I think we are managing well though, for example this morning I caught a massive shark which we were able to get a couple meals out of!”

Geoff’s jaw dropped, “You caught a shark?”

Vikky quickly jumped into the conversation, “Geoff, it was a small shark, like really small. But, it was enough for the five of us to have a hearty breakfast. We appreciated it.”

Austin Bob stared at Vikky for a couple seconds before turning back toward Geoff, “Yeah, extra food is extra food. Made for a nice meal, whoever gets voted out next will probably appreciate that they had quite the meal on the way out.”

Vikky stopped herself from responding for a moment before saying, “Austin, this topic is getting old, let’s talk about something other than catching a shark. Everyone has been helping around Camp.”

Geoff smiled as he looked back and forth between Austin Bob and Vikky.

After a few seconds of silence, Ajax said, “Camp was pretty quiet today after the Contest. I think tensions in the group are pretty high considering how few of us there are, probably because Day 20 is quickly approaching.”

Geoff gave Austin Bob one final look before turning his attention to Ajax, “So, would it be fair to say that everyone is starting to think about the end of this Tournament?”

All the Adventurers nodded their head. Ana said, “Honestly, at this point, I think it would be foolish to not think about who you want to have next to you at the end.”

Ajax added, “Yes, the complicated part is making sure you can make it happen. Having the votes, having Protection, there are so many things which can complicate the plans.”

Geoff added, “Yes, including Godsends and Advantages.”

Ajax responded, “Exactly, like we saw today, the Advantage Ixora played was both unexpected and played a major role in determining who had the opportunity to compete in the second stage, even if it didn’t give her the win.”

Ixora added, “More like a major role in me getting badly injured.”

Geoff nodded his head, “So, is it reasonable to assume that everyone, other than Vikky, is concerned about getting voted out?”

All the Adventurers other than Vikky nodded their heads.

There were several seconds of silence before Ixora said, “Can we just vote now, I feel like we covered everything.”

Geoff looked at the group, who nodded that they were ready to vote.

“Alright then, it is time to vote. Ana, you are up.”

After each Adventurer cast their vote, Geoff collected the voting box.

“Alright, another fascinating Assembly, I’ll count the votes.”

Godsend from Neptsyra, the Spirit God of Fire

“Wait!” Ajax shouts as he stands up and walks over to Geoff, “I found this on our Island on Day 11 while foraging the woods for fruit.” Ajax proceeded to hand Geoff a golden amulet with a bright red ruby at its center.

Geoff held the amulet up for all to see after closely investigating it. “This… is a Godsend. It is a Godsend from Neptsyra, the Spirit God of Fire. It provides whoever wears it the ability to resist damage from fire and may be used for Protection from the Vote. Votes for Ajax will not count.” Austin Bob and Ana gave each other a concerned look. Vikky remained sitting upright with a calm, content look on her face.

Godsend from Ahurani, the Spirit God of Beauty

“Last day I can play this, might as well since Ajax played one,” Austin Bob said as he jogged to Geoff and handed him a golden amulet with a yellow sapphire at its center.

Geoff held the amulet up for all to see after closely investigating it. “This… is a Godsend. It is a Godsend from Ahurani, the Spirit God of Beauty. It enhances the charisma and of whoever wears it and may be used for Protection from the Vote. Votes for Austin Bob will not count.”

“Alright, I’ll count the votes.” Geoff pulled the first vote:

“Does not count.”

Geoff pulled a second Vote and read it aloud:

Ajax

“Does not count.”

Ajax sighed in relief and then smiled.

Geoff then pulled another vote:

Austin

“Does not count.”

Geoff read the next vote:

Austin Bob

“Does not count.”

“There is one vote remaining, so far, no one has any votes against them.”

Geoff read the final vote:

Ixora

“Ixora, you have received the most votes, bring me your Urn.”

Vikky angrily stared at Austin Bob, then Ana.

Ixora stood up, wincing in pain as she walked over to Geoff and gently placed her Urn on the pedestal. She then turned to Ajax and said “Took two Godsends to get me out, not too bad.”

Geoff smiled for a moment before continuing. “Ixora, we are in the individual portion of the Tournament, which means Trial by Combat in the Forsaken Arena is in play. Would you like to do battle against a powerful creature for a chance to stay in the game or will you accept the vote, be eliminated from the game and join the Council of Judgment, granting you the power to vote for the winner of Tournament? Bear in mind that if you die in the Forsaken Arena, you will not be revived. Should you win, you will be partially rejuvenated, may receive one or more Prizes and return to the game. We would hold an immediate revote upon your return and no votes may be cast against you during that revote.”

”I absolutely would not, Geoff, I’ll join the Council.”

Geoff nodded in acknowledgment, “Ixora, your decision is final. The die has been cast. Your adventure ends here.”

Ixora’s reshattered Urn

Geoff shattered the Urn with a forceful swing. Ana waved at Ixora with a smile, Ixora looked back with a neutral expression and walked away.

“Another exhilarating Party Assembly. Head on back to Camp to get some rest, you will need it for tomorrow.” The four remaining Adventurers groaned at Geoff’s comment before gathering their things and heading out of the Assembly Hall.

The Adventurers slowly made their way to Camp. Upon reaching Camp, Vikky announced that she will be sitting by herself at the beach for a little bit before joining the others around the fire.  Ana, Ajax and Austin Bob restarted the Camp fire and quietly sat beside it as they each thought about how they would like the last four days of the Tournament to play out.

Day 15 of the Apex Adventurer Tournament

Not Everything Has to be Sass and Sarcasm

A gentle breeze pushed a lock of Ixora’s hair in front of her face as she sat on the beach looking out at the ocean. The breeze constantly changed its intensity and direction, causing the strand to dance past her vision before she gently swept it back into place. As she watched, the skies just above the water’s edge brightened with shocks of pink and purple, the sunrise giving way to a clear, bright morning.

After a while, Ixora made her way toward the camp firepit. She contemplated the stockpile of wood for several seconds before looking back at the Camp and muttering under her breath, “Make your own damn fire.” She then grabbed a long branch from the pile and made her way into the woods.

Ixora spent the next half hour exploring the woods, searching for a Godsend, Advantage or even just some fruit she could eat before heading back to Camp. She used her long branch to flip rocks and push aside branches as she searched. After realizing her search was going to end up fruitless, she sat on a flat boulder and decided to open her reward from winning in the Forsaken Arena. She set the wooden box beside her and opened it.

“Oh, cool!” Ixora lifted a bronze hilt from the box, as soon as the hilt was clear of the box it began to glow a burnt orange and a blade extended from the hilt.

“Huh, magic shortsword, very cool.” She then pulled a dark red potion from the box and placed it in her bag. “Ok, time to get back.”

Ixora began to make her way back to Camp. Roughly halfway through her journey she heard birds chirping nearby. Two small birds, with vibrant yellow feathers and red feet, seemed to be deep in conversation, quickly darting side to side on the branch they were perched upon. Ixora smiled and watched them for a few seconds before they took flight past her. She quickly turned around, hoping for one last look, but they were already gone. As she turned back to the path she noticed a bush bearing several purple berries. She picked them, rinsed them with some water from her flask and then ate them as she finished her walk back to Camp.

Vikky saw Ixora approaching from the woods and shouted out, “Hey! Looks like you were on quite the walk! Come on over, we saved your food for you!”

Vikky’s shouting caught the attention of Ajax and Ana, who walked over to keep Ixora company as she ate her late breakfast.

Vikky continued, “If the potatoes are too cold, I can reheat them a bit in the pan, I didn’t clean it yet.”

Ixora gave a quick response, “No, Vikky, that’s ok. Thanks, though.”

Ajax noticed another plate of leftovers and asked if Austin Bob was still sitting at the beach. “I’m surprised he didn’t come back yet for his leftovers.”

Vikky slid Austin’s plate closer to her before responding, “He will, I think he is still thinking about the Arena fight. I really hope none of us have to do that. Watching two of our friends fight, that was worse than watching what happened to HOBO.”

The other Adventurers nodded in agreement and soon they sat quietly in the shade to pass the time.

After another hour of sitting at the beach, Vikky reheated Austin’s breakfast and walked it out to him. “Oh, thanks. Not hungry really. I’ll eat though, guess I should.”

Vikky sat beside him, “I can tell you are still thinking about fighting Ikswobel.”

 Austin looked at Vikky with a blank face then looked back out to the ocean. “Yeah, I am, after going through that… I have to win this Tournament.”

Vikky looked at Austin, who continued to look out at the waves. “Yeah, I hope it is us at the end.” She stood up and quickly walked back to the Camp.

The Adventurers were drinking a lot of water as they sat in the shade, hoping for the breeze from the morning to return. The island was heating up and the day was particularly humid. Ajax sat up as he noticed something glinting in the sand halfway between the Camp and the beach. The entire Party stood and slowly approached. There were several marble sized orbs rolling about the sand, sparking white or blue a few times a second. As the sparking orbs collided into one another, letting loose a bright flash, the Adventurers quickly averted their eyes. When their vision refocused, they saw a massive blue lion made of electrical energy standing before them.

Ohm my! A L-Ion, currently the biggest threat to the Adventurers!

Ajax recognized the creature and warned the others, “I read about these, this is a L-Ion! Be careful, they will shock you!”

The L-Ion slowly stepped closer to the Adventurers as its mane pulsed with energy, dropping bright sparks to the sand below.

Hearing the commotion, Austin Bob came sprinting towards the Camp from the beach, deftly stooping to pick up a rock from the ground and throw it at the L-Ion, forcefully hitting one of its hindlegs. The L-Ion craned its head to the side upon being hit by the rock, an opportunity Vikky took to fire two arrows into its neck. Ana followed up Vikky’s attack by throwing two daggers, missing with one and sinking the other next to the arrows.

The L-Ion roared, the arrow heads and dagger which were impaled into the creature’s neck shot outward as the creature’s wounds pulsed with energy. It then charged forward and swiped its paw at Vikky, its claws creating a large gash just above her left hip. Vikky fell to the ground and shouted as she continued to be shocked by electrical energy which was emanating from her wound. The L-Ion then turned to bite at Ana, narrowly missing her.

Ajax swung a wooden club at the L-Ion, “Careful hitting it if your weapon is entirely made of metal.”

Ixora looked down at her new shortsword, which was entirely made of metal, then shrugged her shoulders and slashed twice. The first strike missed but the second connected. Her arm froze in place as the shortsword cut laterally across the L-Ion’s side, Ixora’s hand clenched around the hilt of the weapon as electrical energy coursed through her forearm. “Ow, ok! Good call, Ajax!”

Austin Bob closed the distance and picked up the rock he tossed earlier, this time keeping it in hand and bludgeoning the L-Ion in the forehead. After a mighty roar the L-Ion clawed Austin Bob across the chest, knocking him off balance. He fell to the ground, convulsing and shouting incoherently. Vikky struggled to her feet and fired two more arrows into the creature, which then collapsed to the ground. The body of the L-Ion stopped sparking and its bright glow began to fade.

“Gah, Geoff seriously needs to get a hobby or something. I’m so tired of getting randomly attacked, are the Contests and Arena fights not enough?!” Austin Bob shouted as he launched a cloud of sand at the dead L-Ion with a forceful kick.

Vikky sternly looked at Austin for a second before responding in a flat tone, “We all knew this Tournament was going to be tough on us, maybe go for a short walk.”

Austin Bob wheeled on Vikky, “You know what?!” Then caught himself and took a breath, looking up at her more calmly, “I think that is a good idea.”

Austin walked to the Camp, picked up his adventuring gear and walked into the woods. After a couple minutes of walking, he stopped to open the Prize box he received for winning his combat against Ikswobel. “Ah, awesome, Godsend of Ahurani, Spirit Goddess of Beauty! And… a health potion… pretty good. And this one won’t be poisoned.” He stood up and tossed the wooden box into the woods, pocketed his rewards and headed back to Camp.

Ajax whispered to the others as he saw Austin approaching in the distance, “He’s smiling, guess the walk was a good call. I think we are all getting a little irritable after so many days of hunger, Contests and combat.”

Ana moved a few inches to the side to make room for Austin Bob between her and Vikky.

The Adventurers sat together for a few minutes before Geoff appeared before them, “Good morning Pühl Party! Wow, we are down to five Adventurers and you can feel that energy.”

Austin Bob looked up at Geoff, “If that was a pun, I am in no mood for it! That L-Ion attack, seriously not necessary.”

Ixora quickly added, “Yeah, we probably could have just skipped that.”

Geoff laughed, “This is a Tournament to find out who is the Apex Adventurer! Trust me, we could make things a whole lot tougher. Alright, go ahead and grab your gear and follow me to a nearby beach for today’s Prize Contest.”

The Adventurers followed Geoff along the shoreline. After a six-minute walk they noticed an obstacle course awaiting them in the distance.

“Today you will be competing for some rejuvenation!” Geoff shouted, eliciting a loud cheer from the tired Adventurers.

“The winner will choose one other Adventurer to join them for a trip to a hot spring which has magical healing properties. In addition, the two Adventurers going on this reward trip will receive a Meal of Happiness from our sponsor for today’s Contest.

“No way, I want to win this one so badly!” Ana shouted as she excitedly nudged Ixora’s shoulder with a gentle fist bump.

Austin Bob began to stretch, “Food and some magical healing, oh yeah, this one is for me.”

Once the excitement in the Adventurers cooled off Geoff continued, “Each of you will make your way through this obstacle course. The first obstacle will be to break through a wall made of wood. Next, you will go through a crawl-under while avoiding the caltrops which have been scattered across the sand beneath the net. Next, you will break through a second, slightly thicker, wooden wall. On the other side of the second wall, you find a POrc waiting for you. You must defeat this Pig-Orc hybrid creature in combat. That’s right, combat against another one of the unique hybrid Orc creatures found only here at the Icosahedron Isles. After defeating the POrc, you must complete a very complicated puzzle by assembling a wizard’s tower from a series of interlocking pieces. The first person to complete their puzzle will be today’s winner.”

“I will count down from three, then on my go the race will begin!” Geoff exclaimed.

The Adventurers nodded in acknowledgment before Geoff shouted, “Go!”

The Adventurers sprinted forward at the wooden walls. Ixora and Ana arrived at their walls first, noticing how thin the wooden boards were, the two rogues lowered their shoulders and charged right through their respective walls, knocking the wooden boards off the frame and scattering them onto the sand. The others noticed the success of Ana and Ixora, and copied their move as they reached their walls moments later.

“Wow, everyone just charging through their first wall! Making it look easy!” Geoff shouted from a distance.

Ana and Ixora extended their shared lead as they dove beneath the crawl-under net and quickly scrambled to the other side while dodging each metal caltrop trap. Vikky was third through the crawl-under, although she cut her hand on a caltrop shortly before getting across. Both Ajax and Austin Bob struggled to get past the crawl-under, only making it through as Ana and Ixora reached the second set of wooden walls. This time, Ana and Ixora bounced off their walls as they ran into them.

“Ow!” Ana shouted as she held her shoulder.

Ixora fell back on the sand after running into the wall. She quickly recovered and jumped to her feet with a dagger in her hand, repeatedly smashing the hilt of the weapon into the wood. After punching four holes in the wall, Ixora forcefully kicked through the wall and charged ahead. Ana broke through her wall seconds later, but the pair were no longer tied for first.

Another iconic Orc hybrid creature unique to the Icosahedron Isles – the Pig-Orc (POrc)

Ixora drew her second dagger as she ran at the POrc standing before her. She closed the distance and made quick work of her opponent by stabbing with her daggers, artfully dodging its attempt to bash her with a wooden mace. She jumped toward it once more, stabbing until she had defeated the creature in about twelve seconds, immediately sprinting toward her puzzle.

Ana used a similar technique to fight her POrc. Ana could her the other three Adventurers breaking down their wooden walls as she stabbed her dagger into the neck of the Pig-Orc. “Ugh, I need to hurry up,” she muttered to herself as she sprinted forward.

Vikky, Ajax and Austin Bob each reach their POrcs around the same time. Vikky did not charge directly at her opponent, but drew her bow and repeatedly fired arrows at it while running in wide circles around it to maintain distance. Vikky was able to defeat her POrc in under thirty seconds without taking a hit.

Austin Bob decided to trade shots with the POrc, slashing a shortsword at its chest while it bludgeoned his head and chest with a mace. After spitting blood onto the ground, Austin Bob began to insult the creature as it knocked him unconscious with a forceful hit to his head.

Ajax approached combat more cautiously, relying on magical spells from a distance. He lifted his magical focus, a magnifying glass with a wooden frame, and held it toward the POrc while whispering incantations. Purple liquid began to stream from the magnifying glass, poisoning the POrc and causing it to shout in pain as it continued to attack with its mace. Ajax took two direct hits before he was able to spray enough magical poison to defeat his opponent.

Ajax carefully wiped his magnifying glass clean with a silk cloth, which he tossed on top of the dead POrc before looking up to see that both Ana and Ixora were nearly finished with assembling their tower puzzles. After a deep sigh, Ajax began to walk towards his puzzle, not expecting to even be able to start before this Contest has a winner.

Vikky, however, still had hope and began to organize her puzzle pieces as Ixora and Ana scrambled to finish theirs. Ana was struggling with her second-to-last piece, rotating it several times, but could not get it to fit. Ixora was similarly struggling before she decided to the flip the piece over, easily dropping it into place.  As she placed the final piece she waved her hand in the air and shouted, “Geoff! Geoff! I’m done!”

Geoff teleported next to Ixora to inspect the puzzle, after quickly checking it to make the pieces were fitted together correctly, he shouted, “We have a winner, congratulations Ixora!”

Ixora enthusiastically jumped up and down for a second before tampering her excitement while Ana walked over and gave her a quick hug. The other Adventurers walked over and also congratulated Ixora before the entire Party gathered together for Geoff to award to Prize.

“Ixora, congratulations on winning today’s Contest! You will be teleported to a hot spring which has magical healing properties for some rejuvenation. Also, waiting for you at the Spring will be a Meal of Happiness for you and one other Adventurer. So, who will be joining you at the hot spring?”

Ixora walked over to Geoff to address the group, “This is a tough one, I know everyone would love the chance for some food and healing… since Ana was neck and neck with me the entire Contest I’m going to choose her.”

Ana smiled and walked over to Ixora, she put her around Ixora and the two flashed away to their reward.

“Alright, the rest of you will head back to Camp. Ixora and Ana will be teleported back to you in a few hours.”

The remaining members of the Pühl Party began to walk back to Camp. While Geoff was still within earshot, Austin Bob said, “It would have been nice to have been teleported back to Camp.”

Geoff smiled in the distance before vanishing altogether.

Vikky sighed, “I really was hoping Ixora would pick me, I love Meals of Happiness.”

A hot spring with magical rejuvenation properties – a treat and advantage all rolled into one

Ajax shrugged his shoulders, “I don’t know what that is, but a magical spring with healing powers would have been nice to experience, even just seeing one would have been interesting.”

Upon reaching the Camp the trio each made their way to the beach to rest. “The chores can wait until we are all together!” Austin Bob shouted as he waded into the water.

Upon hearing Austin’s comment Vikky abruptly stood up and walked to the water’s edge, “Not everything has to be sass and sarcasm!” She then walked back to Camp to relax in her tent.

Meanwhile Ixora and Ana arrived at the resort, “Whoa, check out this hot spring!” Ixora shouted as she ran over to it.

“Yeah, this is really cool! Also, it seems we were teleported to a mountain, we may not be on the same island anymore,” Ana replied.

The pair decided to walk their surroundings before relaxing in the hot spring. “Yeah, you’re right, looks like we are pretty far up, I don’t remember seeing anything this high up on our island.”

They enjoyed the view for a beat before sliding into relaxation mode, “Alright, we don’t know how long we have, let’s jump in the spring and open up that Meal of Happiness.”

Ixora placed the Meal of Happiness beside the hot spring before dipping in. As her body lowered into the pool, the water’s mist began to glow green and gravitate towards her. “Oh wow, that feels amazing!”

Ana saw a number of cuts and bruises slowly fade from Ixora’s arms. As she stepped into the pool herself she marveled at the healing, “This is really neat!”

Ixora grabbed the Meal of Happiness and opened the large red box, “Oooh, two rubies, a sandwich already cut in half, and ugh… roasted potatoes.”

Ana laughed, “Hey, food is food!”

Ixora smiled and handed Ana half the food and one ruby, “We’ll split everything down the middle.”

The girls giggled and tucked into their meal, spending the next couple hours chatting and splashing in the hot spring before being teleport back to the Camp.

When Ana and Ixora appeared at the beach near their Camp, they could see the other Adventurers gathered around a fire. “Let’s tell them about the Spring and food, but maybe leave the rubies out?” Ixora whispered to Ana as they walked towards the others.

Ana agreed.

Vikky was the first to notice Ana and Ixora, “Hey, they’re back! You two looked relaxed.”

Ana sat down next to Vikky, “The spring was really cool, there wasn’t much food, but a half a sandwich each.”

Vikky’s jaw dropped, “They didn’t give you each your own meal?!”

The Adventurers spent the next hour chatting around the fire before turning in for the night earlier than usual. They knew they would need to be fully rested for the Protection Contest the following day.

Would you approach this cloaked figure in the night?

In the middle of the night, Ixora jolted awake in a cold sweat. She walked outside of her tent and sensed she was being watched. On edge, she slowly drew her dagger and made her way toward the beach. As she walked, a cloaked figure came into view, keeping well away from the cluster of tents. Ixora whispered to it, “Hey! I can see you, who are you?”

The figure in the distance responded by merely waving her to come closer. She looked back at the Camp for a moment, hesitating before slowly walking toward the beach. As she approached a cloud shifted, stopping her in her tracks when the moonlight revealed the figure was a skeleton in a long black robe.

“You have nothing to fear, I am a trader. As a secret Prize for your victory at today’s Contest you have been granted the opportunity to shop with me. Take a look at my wares and let me know if there is anything you would like to purchase.”

Ixora was relieved to hear the trader’s message and she sheathed her dagger, leaning close to inspect the trader’s offerings. She briefly considered purchasing a Protection Nullifier for four gems, then considered cursing Austin Bob for three gems before deciding to buy an Advantage in the next Protection Contest for three gems.

“Excellent choice.” The robed skeleton responded as Ixora carefully placed three gems into his hand.

“Not to worry, they will not fall through, my bones are interconnected by a magical mesh which most cannot see. Thank you for your business.”

Ixora began walking back to the Camp, glancing over her shoulder for one last look but was surprised to see that the undead trader was no longer at beach. Instead she saw the moonlight rippling through the water’s waves.

Ixora picked up a couple pieces of wood on her way back to the Camp in case anyone noticed she was away, carefully adding them to the dwindling fire and returning to her tent to get some sleep for Day 16.

Day 14 of the Apex Adventurer Tournament – The Vote

The sun was beginning to set as the Pühl Party readied for the hike to the Assembly Hall. Ajax picked up his Urn after affixing the Shield of Protection to his back. He started to walk toward the Assembly Hall and the other Adventurers followed behind him.

As the Adventurers entered the Assembly Hall and made their way to their seats, they saw Geoff already sitting in his chair with a big smile on his face. “Welcome to another Party Assembly Pühl Party, wow, down to just six!”

The Adventurers took their seats, many nodded and others flashed a subdued smirk in response to Geoff’s welcome.

“Wow, was expecting a little more of an excited response. We are at Day 14, closing in on the end of the Tournament. Before we get into it, I will remind everyone that just like the last Vote, the Champions Arena and the Forsaken Arena are in play. OK, let’s get to it! Last time we were all together for Party Assembly, everyone gave me a sense that the Camp was not united, is that still the case?”

Ana nodded, “Yes, very much so.”

Ajax added, “Even though the last vote was unanimous it is clear that everyone is still playing their own game.”

“Ajax, you won today’s Protection Contest. How do you feel?”

Ajax quickly responded, “I feel great! I feel at risk every time I go to Party Assembly, and today I felt like Austin almost had me beat at the end of the Contest so I am glad to have come out the winner with immunity tonight.”

As Ajax finished his response Austin chimed in, “You know, Ajax is quite a threat in this game in terms of the physical Contests, since he can just turn into a giant spider or a bear whenever he feels like it. I, however, am not a bear.

Ana and Ixora both added on, “I am also not a bear.”

Ajax thought for a moment before responding, “While I know my abilities are putting a target on my back, I feel like I am in a situation where I have to win every time to stay in this game.”

“So, changing gears, this is kind of interesting… Vikky, you were knocked out early in today’s Contest. Why do you think this was the case?”

Vikky said, “Well, first I would like to congratulate Ajax for his win today, he didn’t even have to turn into a bear to do it, so congrats. I am figuring others see me as a physical threat in this game, I have always been a very capable hunter and adventurer. Today I was just struggling to get over that obstacle.”

“So, who here feels vulnerable tonight.”

Everyone, except Ajax, raised their hand.

All the Adventurers look at each other and Ixora commented, “Not shocking.”

“Do we feel like a Godsend might be in play tonight?”

Ixora said, “You never know… that’s sort of how that works.”

Ana shook her head no.

Austin Bob said, “Everyone here has a plan. If we all follow through with that plan we are not going home. Stick to the plan.”

“Obviously not everyone can be in the ‘we’ you are describing.”

Austin Bob nodded his head.

“Alright, with that, let’s get to the vote.”

One by one, the Pühl Party members went to cast their votes and returned to their seats.

Geoff retrieved the Votes as the Adventurers looked on. “OK, the votes have been cast, if you have a Godsend you would like to play, this is the time to do so.” After a brief pause, Geoff nodded his head and said, “I will tally the….”

Austin Bob quickly stands up, “You know, Geoff, I wouldn’t be able to forgive myself if I went home without playing this.” Austin then slowly walked over to Geoff and handed him a silver amulet adorned with a blue gemstone. Geoff took the amulet from him and examined it in the torch light.

A Godsend from Elekpasha, Spirit God of Cold

“This… is a Godsend. It is a Godsend from Elekpasha, the Spirit God of Cold. It could be used to curse another Adventurer to make them feel ice cold and may be used for Protection from the Vote. Votes cast against Austin will not count.”

Ajax shouted, “You are the reason I have frostbitten hands!”

Austin walked back to his seat while saying, “I have helped you in the past and I felt I needed to do that to help me win this game, I hope you understand.”

Geoff continued, if there are no other Godsends or Advantages to be played, I will tally the votes.”

He pulled the first Vote from the box and read aloud:

“We are at two votes Ixora and two votes Vikky.”

“This is the final vote. If we have a tie Ixora and Vikky will be required to do combat in the Champions Arena.”

He pulled the final vote and read:

“Ixora… four votes are enough, please bring me your Urn.”

Ixora sighed and retrieved her Urn, slowly bringing it to Geoff. “Ixora, the die has been cast. Your adventure ends here.” Geoff then shattered the Urn with a swift blow.

”As you know, you have an opportunity to regain your spot in this Tournament. Would you like to fight in the Forsaken Arena, risking your spot on the Council of Judgement, for a chance to reenter this game?”

Ixora thought for a moment before agreeing to fight in the Forsaken Arena.

“Alright, Ixora you made the decision to fight in the Forsaken Arena for a chance to stay in this game. That fight will be taking place right now.”

The other Adventurers looked at one another with a mix of emotions, the memory of HOBO’s encounter still fresh in their minds. Austin Bob quickly jumped to his feet, the others following suit right before they all experienced a dizzying flash and found themselves in a now familiar cave.

The Adventurers looked down into the Arena where they saw Ixora and Geoff. After a moment, Geoff disappeared and in his place was the same twelve-foot-tall elemental sprite which fought HOBO. It stood before Ixora, a tall, organized mass of cracked boulders interconnected by long, weaving, thorny vines. A number of the vines were brown in color as opposed to the vibrant green Ixora remembered from watching HOBO’s combat.

Ixora acted immediately, taking the initiative in this combat and lunging forward with a dagger in each hand. The first twenty seconds of the combat entailed Ixora slashing at the vines on the elemental’s legs while dodging its attacks. After her sixth strike, she was able to cut through a large vine and saw a boulder from the creature’s hip fall to the ground.

The elemental responded by raising its arms high in the air and slamming them down on Ixora, who was flung backward forcefully. She staggered to her feet and realized she was bleeding badly from a large gash on her left thigh. She ran forward, limping slightly, and jumped up as she approached the elemental to stab a dagger into a large crack in a boulder on the creature’s torso. Using that dagger and momentum she pulled herself up and attempted to stab her other dagger into another cracked boulder… until she realized she was unable to lift her left arm. She screamed in anguish as she let go and dropped to the ground.

Ixora backed away slightly as she pulled out a small red potion and drank it, hanging back until she was ready to resume the fight. The gash on her leg rapidly scabbed over and her left shoulder popped back into place as the potion’s magic took effect. After a deep breath Ixora drew two shortswords and charged forward. The elemental lumbered toward her and whipped a leg in Ixora’s direction, striking her in the sternum and sending her flying back several feet once more. Ixora rolled from her back onto her arms and coughed up a concerning amount of blood before staggering to her knees. As she stood up, she pulled her last weapon, a dagger she kept strapped to her ankle, and walked toward the creature. Ixora was no longer able to use her natural speed and agility, she was too injured. She waited for the elemental to attack and miss before making her move. As the creature regained its balance she ran forward and struck at the cracked boulder she assaulted before, this time she causing the boulder to break in half. The elemental lurched to the side as fragments of stone fell to the ground, then the creature toppled over.

The Adventurers cheered loudly as they realized Ixora had won. The body of the elemental magically disappeared as Ixora sat on the ground and looked up at the Adventurers with a bloody smile.

Geoff appeared beside Ixora, “Alright everyone, join me in congratulating Ixora for her victory in the Forsaken Arena!”

The Pühl Party cheered loudly, wishing they could be on the Arena floor to rally around their friend.

Geoff continued, “Ixora because you won you will be partially rejuvenated and receive one or more Prizes upon returning to Camp. Additionally, since you were victorious, your Urn will be restored and become immune to the Vote during this Party Assembly which we will complete right now.”

As Geoff finished speaking, he and the Pühl Party teleported back to the Assembly Hall.

Back in the Assembly Hall Ixora, badly injured, stood before Geoff. She continued to bleed heavily, the small pool of blood at her feet mixing with the water from her shattered Urn.

The other Adventurers nervously took their seats. All were clearly thinking about who they would vote for now that Ixora had won her right to remain in the game.

Geoff waited until everyone was settled in their seat before speaking, “Alright… before we get back to the Vote we have a few important things to take care of. Firstly…”

Geoff handed Ixora a small vial which contained a dark purple liquid. Ixora immediately uncorked the vial and drank its contents. Within moments her wounds closed, her frame jolted in different directions as bones popped back into the proper positions and the color returned to her face.

Ixora began to laugh, stretching her jaw oddly, “I think… hey, yeah! This potion made my wisdom teeth grow back. What did you give me Geoff?!”

Geoff chuckled, “We promised that you would be healed. Next…”

Geoff stepped away from Ixora to retrieve a gnarled wooden staff that was leaning on a nearby wall. He tapped the base of the staff into the pool of bloodied water between them and the pieces of ceramic began to shimmer a golden color and vibrate, slowly floating in the air. Ixora’s Urn began to reassemble itself, the shimmering pieces pressing together, the seams and cracks between the pieces beginning to glow even brighter. The Urn floated toward Ixora, and as she reached out and grabbed it the magical light faded, revealing an intact Urn where the fragments were held together by a thin layer of gold.

“One last thing before we get on with another Vote.”

Geoff handed Ixora a wooden box, “Hold onto this, you can open it back at Camp.”

Ixora nodded, putting the shoebox sized container into her backpack before heading to her seat.

“Alright, the way this will work is that any Protected status from the previous Vote will remain in place and Ixora is also safe from the Vote for winning in the Forsaken Arena. This means that Ajax, Austin Bob and Ixora are now all safe from the Vote. You will have a few minutes to discuss before we get to the vote and as always, Advantages may be played and the Champions and Forsaken Arenas are both in play.  Since Ixora defeated the elemental in the Forsaken Arena, a new creature has taken its place and is ready to battle anyone who chooses to fight for their right to stay in the game. Does everyone understand?”

The Adventurers all nodded.

The entire group was silent for several seconds before Ana said, “Honestly, I am ready to vote, can we just get to the Vote?”

Ajax’s eyes widened, “Well I am glad I’m safe, uh… is everyone already ready? I was hoping to deliberate a little bit.”

Ikswobel stood up with a smile on his face. “Geoff, I think this might change the way people are thinking about their vote…” Ikswobel proudly walked over to Geoff and handed him a small, wooden medallion. “I am playing this against Austin Bob to take away his Protection from the Vote.”

A Protection Neutralizer, a powerful Advantage if used appropriately

Ikswobel looked at Austin Bob who was glaring back at him, “We have just been butting heads more and more lately and I don’t think keeping you around is good for me.”

Geoff held up the wooden medallion for everyone to see, “This… is a Protection Neutralizer and has been played against Austin Bob, who is now no longer Protected from the Vote.”

As Ikswobel walked back to his seat, he whispered something into Ajax’s ear.

“Oh yeah!?” Austin Bob barked at Ikswobel before quickly walking to Ana and Vikky.

For the next minute the Adventurers were whispering their thoughts to one another, moving back and forth between groups and glancing around while Geoff observed the chaos from the podium.

When the flurry of activity died down, the Adventurers claimed their seats and the Assembly Hall was quiet.

Geoff, with a surprised look on his face, said, “Wow, that was something. Based on the silence, are we ready to vote?”

The Adventurers nodded. “Alright, let’s get to the Vote.”

For the second time this evening, the Pühl Party members went to cast their votes and returned to their seats.

Geoff retrieved the Votes as the Adventurers looked on. “OK, the votes have been cast. If you have a Godsend you would like to play, this is the time to do so.”

After a brief pause, Geoff nodded his head and said, “I will tally the votes.”

Geoff pulled the first Vote from the box and read aloud:

Geoff pulled the fifth vote:

“Final vote. If this is a tie Ikswobel and Austin Bob will be required to do combat in the Champions Arena.”

Geoff pulled the final vote and read:

Ana, Ixora, Ajax and Vikky all shouted out of excitement as the tie vote was announced. Austin Bob and Ikswobel looked at each and gave each other a curt nod, in recognition that they are about to do combat in the Champion’s Arena for their right to stay in the Tournament.

Geoff continued “Ikswobel, Austin Bob, you both received three Votes, resulting in a tie. The rules of the Apex Adventurer Tournament state that this tie will be resolved by combat to the death in the Champion’s Arena. The victor will remain in the Tournament, the loser will be revived but not rejuvenated, have their Urn smashed and then be given the option to fight in the Forsaken Arena for a chance to remain in the Game.”

As Geoff finished explaining what would happen next the Adventurers instinctively jumped to their feet. A moment later they experienced a familiar dizzying flash. Austin Bob and Ikswobel appeared in the center of a circular arena of course gravel. Both were in awe of the Arena as they slowly gazed upward to see a massive Colosseum built of limestone and marble with accents of silver, gold and polished wood. The other Adventurers had been teleported to a viewing box near the top of the enormous Colosseum. Each Adventurer opted to stand at the railing at the very edge of the viewing box as they anxiously awaited the battle between Ikswobel and Austin Bob.

Geoff was standing at the center of the Champion’s Arena. He looked to Austin Bob, then turned to look at Ikswobel, “Alright gentlemen, the moment I disappear the combat has started. This is a combat to the death.”

Geoff took only three seconds after he finished speaking to disappear, but for all the Adventurers it felt like an eternity as they waited for the combatants to spring into action.

Austin Bob took the initiative and hoisted his heavy crossbow to eye level to fire a bolt into Ikswobel’s left shoulder. Austin then immediately dropped the crossbow to the ground, ran forward while drinking a healing potion and stood before Ikswobel while drawing a rapier. A moment later Austin Bob began to cough, as he wiped blood away from his mouth with his forearm he glared at Ikswobel.

Ikwobel smiled, then said, “that is right, the one I made for you has poison in it.” Ikswobel then took a step forward and stood his ground as he waited for Austin Bob to reach him before swinging his mace at Austin Bob’s head. His mace staggered Austin Bob to a knee with a gut-wrenching crunch.

As he stood up, Austin Bob clapped his hands together, launching a wave of energy forward with a thunderous, deafening boom. The wave of energy pushed Ikswobel backward in spite of his effort to hunker down, his heels leaving a deep trail in the gravel.

Ikswobel regained his balance and drank his own healing potion before swinging his mace at Austin Bob once again. This time he swung downward with an overhead strike that hit Austin Bob in the right shoulder, causing him to once again drop to the ground.

Austin Bob shouted in pain as he stood up, seeing his right arm dangling at his side and trying in vain to lift it. He glared at Ikswobel and pointed his rapier at him before charging forward and stabbing at his opponent’s sternum. Austin Bob struck with such strength and ferocity that his rapier ran right through Ikswobel, and the onlookers could clearly see the tip of the blade protruding through his back. Austin Bob released his grip on the rapier and staggered backward, breathing deeply as he stared at Ikswobel, the look of anger on Austin’s face softening to a blank stare.

Ikswobel slowly waved his right hand in a circle as he held his holy symbol to enhance the volume of his voice, he looked at Austin Bob and then up to the viewing gallery and said, “This has truly been the best opportunity of my life.”

Ikswobel then sat on the ground before collapsing backward.

Unlike after Ixora’s victory in the Forsaken Arena, no one cheered for Austin Bob as they sadly looked down at Ikswobel’s body.

Geoff appeared beside Austin Bob, “Alright, congratulations on your victory. You are still in this Tournament. Because you won you will be partially rejuvenated and receive one or more Prizes upon returning to Camp.”

Geoff then walked over to Ikswobel’s body, knelt down and touched Ikswobel’s holy symbol. The amulet began to glow a bright white, the glow spreading to the rest of his body. Geoff gently pulled the rapier out from Ikswobel’s chest and tossed it to the ground. The glow began to fade. Ikswobel seized on the ground for a moment before beginning to violently cough, then staggered to his feet, still bruised and bloody, but alive.

Geoff loudly announced, “Alright, let’s get back.”

In a bright flash, everyone found themselves back in the Assembly Hall.

This time it was Ikswobel who was teleported to Geoff’s podium, the rest of the Adventurers having been deposited on their seats.  They quietly looked up as Geoff said to Ikswobel, “You have been defeated in the Champion’s Arena, so you must now decide if you will accept being out of this Tournament and take your place on the Council of Judgement or if you would like to compete in the Forsaken Arena for a chance to stay.”

Ikswobel laughed before responding, “In my condition, you think I want to go fight a new opponent in the Forsaken Arena? Sorry dude. Like, man, I wish I could stay, but I know I should just go ahead and take my spot on the Council.”

Geoff nodded then said, “In that case, Ikswobel, please bring me your Urn.”

Ikswobel let out a deep sigh before walking past the other Adventurers to retrieve his Urn. Making his way back to Geoff he said, “You know, man, I know this Urn represents our life in this game and stuff, but is there any chance I could take it home? I want to put it in my living room, I think it would really tie the place together.”

Geoff sternly replied, “No, unfortunately no one will be able to their Urn home with them.”

Ikswobel let out another deep sigh and held up his Urn, “Alright, let’s just get this over with then.”

Geoff lifted the ceremonial mace and said, “Ikswobel, the die has been cast. Your adventure ends here.”

Geoff then forcefully swung the mace and shattered Ikswobel’s Urn. Nearly half the water in the Urn splashed onto Ikswobel’s face. Ikswobel spit out some water, ran his hand through his wet hair to pull it back, then gave Geoff a hug before walking away.

When he was out of sight Austin Bob asked, “Hey, Geoff, so… are you going to heal me and give me my reward now or do I actually have to wait until I get back to Camp?”

Geoff responded, “Come on up, we can take care of this now.”

Austin Bob proudly walked to the podium and smirked at the Urn pieces on the ground before turning his attention to Geoff.

Geoff handed Austin Bob a small purple potion, identical to the one Ixora had received. Austin Bob immediately drank the potion, and with a loud pop his shoulder dropped back into position and his jaw began to realign, causing him to wince in pain.

Geoff stepped away to retrieve a wooden box similar to the one Ixora received. “This is a Prize you earned for your victory in the Champion’s Arena, wait until you are back at Camp to open this.”

Austin Bob grabbed the box and excitedly walked back to his seat.

Geoff waited until Austin Bob was seated before addressing the Adventurers, “Wow, another intense Party Assembly… and I have a feeling the rest will not be getting any easier as we approach the end of this Tournament. I am sure everyone is exhausted after tonight, so head back to Camp and get some rest.”

As the Adventurers walked back to Camp, they noticed another lightning storm raging in the distance.

Austin Bob chuckled out loud, “Guess Iks was wrong about it being his lucky day, huh!?”

Austin quickly realized the others either did not find his comment funny or were simply not in the mood to joke around about Ikswobel or his brutal exit from the Tournament.

The remainder of the walk back to Camp was silent and tense, and the Adventurers immediately went to their respective tents upon their arrival and went straight to sleep.

Day 14 of the Apex Adventurer Tournament – The Contest

Footprints Appearing in the Sand

Nearly an hour before sunrise the Adventurers woke up to a loud crack of thunder. The Pühl Party gathered on the beach to gaze upon a massive, angry thunderstorm in the distance.

“Wow, the thunder was so loud I thought the storm was nearby. I was confused when I woke up and there was no rain,” Ixora said to her awestruck companions.

The Adventurers continued listening to the rumbles and cracks of thunder and watched the occasional lightning bolt strike in the distance.

“Whoa, look at that! It is sign of a good luck!” Ikswobel exclaimed as he excitedly pointed out at a ball of lightning which appeared in the distance. It flashed brighter for a moment before disappearing.

“Wow, last time I saw one of those, I was just a kid. Today will be a good day!” Ikswobel continued.

The storm continued to drift farther away, fading to a small mass of dark clouds as the sunrise finally began.

Ixora volunteered to prepare breakfast if someone else would get the fire started. No one volunteered initially.

“Seriously, no one else-”

“I got it,” Austin jumped in. “I’ll get the fire going.”

Ikswobel, Ajax and Vikky announced they would do a quick search for fruit and walked off into the woods. Ana watched the trio walk away and then noticed Ixora and Austin Bob were getting started on breakfast. “Great, this is great… I’ll go get wood or crabs or something, I guess.”

Ana began to walk the shoreline, keeping her eyes open for anything worth bringing back to Camp. After just a couple minutes of searching, Ana decided instead to sit on the beach and reflect. Sadly, her moment of peace was interrupted as she overheard laughter coming from the woods. Ana slowly stood and began to return to Camp. She whispered aloud, “I guess today is a good day to win that shield.”

The Adventurers ate their breakfast of roasted potatoes, wondering aloud when the Contest would begin and what sort of challenge they might face next.

“I hope it’s another one like yesterday, or anything where we don’t have to do a ton of combat.”

“Yeah, I am so exhausted.”

“It has been a long and grueling tournament so far.”

“I hope the Prize will include food.”

“Or at least some sort of rest or rejuvenation.”

When they finished cleaning up from breakfast Ikswobel offered to check Altar Mail for clues or details about what the Contest may involve. The rest of the Pühl Party rested around Camp as they waited for Ikswobel to return.

Nearly twenty minutes later they saw Ikswobel walking back holding a small, wooden block on his head.

An ancient form of communication, what message does this block contain?

“Um, not really sure what this is, I was expecting a scroll like all the other times. Maybe this is saying we won’t get a message or we have to do something with blocks today?”

Ajax smiled and reached out for the object, which Ikswobel placed in his hand.

“This… is the message. It is an ancient spell, not many use it anymore. The message was imbued within this wooden block. Just hold it, clear your mind and you will hear it.”

The Pühl Party quietly watch Ajax as he closed his eyes and held the block. He nodded, then passed it to Ixora, so she could try.

“Whoa, that is so cool!” Ixora exclaimed as she passed the block to Ana.

One by one, the entire Party listened to the message found at Altar Mail:

Today’s winner must display agility and might,

And do so even without their sight.

The victor will also be strong of mind,

All others will quickly fall behind.

The Adventurers shared their interpretations of the rhyming message, concluding it would be some sort of race with obstacles and puzzles.

“The part about no sight was strange, think we will have to do everything in the dark or something?” Ausitn Bob asked, as he looked at Ikswobel.

Ajax noticed Austin’s pointed question and interjected before Ikswobel took notice, “Maybe it will be in the dark, it sounds like maybe we won’t see combat today. It would be nice to go another day without having to deal with fighting each other or random monsters.”

The Adventurers began to prepare themselves for what might be a demanding Contest as they waited for Geoff to appear.

Roughly an hour after the Adventurers listened to the Altar Mail message, they heard Geoff’s voice call out to them, “Hello Pühl Party!”

Ikswobel jumped to his feet, “He’s here! Geoff is here!”

The other Adventurers quickly gathered around Ikswobel.

“I don’t see him, where is he?” Vikky said as she looked for him.

The Pühl Party heard his voice once more, “While you may not be able to see me, I assure you that I am here. Let’s make our way to Contest, follow me.”

The Adventurers looked at one another, confused, before Ana pointed out that footprints were appearing in the sand. Ana quickly ran to catch up to the source of the footprints, as she caught up, she slowed down to match their speed. The others followed suit, they all seemed amused by Geoff’s antics and wondered if he was simply invisible or using magic to create footprints in the sand and remotely communicate with them.

After walking along the shoreline for ten minutes the Adventurers saw a red mat laying on the beach. They gathered together on the mat and waited.

The Pühl Party looked out at the ocean, noticing that the dark storm clouds had cleared and left behind a bright blue sky.

Geoff said to the group, “Looks like everyone is hoping to get on the water, but today’s Contest is actually behind you.”

The Adventurers turned around to see Geoff and a simple obstacle course. “Did you and obstacle course just appear as we looked away briefly?” Austin Bob asked.

“Or they were invisible, and there the whole time.” Ajax said.

Geoff smiled, “Exactly. Alright, we are here on Day 14 to compete in a Protection Contest. In addition to winning the Shield of Protection, today’s winner will receive two rubies and an opportunity to trade with a vendor.”

The Adventurers cheered, albeit with less excitement than for some of the more recent Prize and Protection Contests. Geoff went on to describe the Contest, “Here is how today’s Contest will work. Each of you will be blindfolded and run a simple obstacle course. First, you will climb over a six-foot-tall wall, next you will cross a thirty-foot-long crawl-under, all while blindfolded. Once you get past these two obstacles, you may remove your blindfolds and proceed to solve a simple tangram puzzle. The first four Adventurers to complete their puzzle will advance to the second stage of the Contest. For the second stage of the Contest, the qualifying Adventurers will carry three heavy bags across a fifteen-foot-long balance beam. Once all the bags have been brought across you will open them and collect puzzle pieces which you will use to complete a complicated, abstract puzzle. The first to complete this second puzzle will be today’s winner.”

The Adventurers prepared themselves for the Contest, putting on their blindfolds and sounding off to Geoff that they were ready to start. Geoff shouted back to the Adventurers, “Alright, I am going to count down from three and then shout go… three…two…one… go!”

The Adventurers awkwardly sprang forward, doing their best to run in the sand without being able to see and while keeping their arms outstretched to avoid running directly into the wall obstacle.

Ana was the first to reach the wall and begin climbing. Ikswobel ran into the wall, but he did not let the impact slow him down as he ignored the pain and began to climb.

The sound of Ikswobel hitting the wall helped Austin Bob avoid the same fate and also caused Ixora to stumble, “I do not want to run full speed into a wall, this is a sick joke Geoff!” Ixora exclaimed. 

Ajax and Vikky simultaneously reached the wall as Ana, Ikswobel and Austin Bob finished their climb and jumped down on the other side. The trio on the other side of the wall awkwardly ran forward in a slight crouch, reaching low with their arms to find the beginning of the crawl-under.

Ixora passed Vikky, who had fallen repeatedly from the wall, as Ajax recklessly sprinted forward to the crawl-under.

Ana was the first to finish crawling beneath the obstacle, followed by Ajax, then Austin Bob and finally Ikswobel. All four ripped off their blindfolds and began to assemble their tangram puzzles.

Ixora managed to climb over the wall before hearing Geoff exclaim, “This stage just might be over!”

In the next minute Ajax finished his puzzle, followed by Ana, Austin Bob and then Ikswobel.

The four Adventurers moving on to the second round collected themselves and made their way to the second start line as Vikky and Ixora removed their blindfolds and walked over to the sit out bench.

“Alright Adventurers, I’ll count down once again and we will start the second stage of this Contest. Three… two… one… go!”

All four of the Adventurers quickly sprinted forward, each picking up a heavy bag and carefully walking it across the balance beam. They repeated this process, each managing to carry all three bags across in under a minute.

Ana and Austin Bob completed this task first and began to open the bags to collect their puzzle pieces. As Ana and Austin Bob began to assemble their abstract puzzles Ajax and Ikswobel began to open their bags.

The Adventurers made incredibly slow progress on their puzzles, laying down a few pieces before picking them back up. No one was able to quite figure out how to put it together for several minutes. The Adventurers occasionally glanced at the others and were both surprised and relieved to see that no one else had made progress.

Ajax looked at his puzzle pieces before realizing there was a pattern, the coloring of the shapes distracted him from the repeated patterning on the pieces. He began to sort his pieces and then quickly assembled his puzzle while his competitors watched in awe.

Geoff exclaimed, “Congratulations, wow, another victory for Ajax. Come on over!” Geoff handed Ajax the Shield of Protection as well as two rubies.

“You will be approached by a trader back at Camp for an opportunity to do some shopping.”

Ajax excitedly returned to the group as the other Adventurers congratulated him. Their enthusiasm faded almost immediately as they realized the afternoon would be filled with strategic discussions to figure out who to vote for next.

The Adventurers began their walk back to Camp, following the trail of footprints they left in the sand earlier. Ikswobel tried to lighten the mood, “It’s kind of funny, we followed footprints to get to the Contest, now we’re following footprints to get back.”

Austin Bob sarcastically replied, “Yeah, hilarious.”

Ikswobel stopped walking and turned to look at Austin, “Hey man, this aggression will not stand. Do you have some kind of issue with me?”

Austin smiled and shook his head, “Nah, just playing around, we are good.”

Ikswobel turned to continue walking towards Camp, “I get tensions are high, but remember that this is just a game, man.”

The Adventurers finished their walk back in silence. The tension between Ikswobel and Austin Bob was palpable, both doing their best to walk in a deliberate, controlled manner to disguise their adrenaline induced trembling.

As soon as the Campsite could be seen in the distance Ana announced that she wanted to crack open and enjoy a coconut before the chaos of the pre-Vote strategizing began. Vikky decided to join her and the pair broke off from the group and walked towards the tree line.

While investigating the treetops for coconuts, Ana said, “So… obviously we have to find at least one coconut so they know we went looking… I also truly want some coconut right now. But, since we have a minute to chat, who are you thinking needs to go tonight?”

Vikky pointed out a tree that had several coconuts and was growing at an angle, Ana leaped onto the tree and began to scale it. “I mean, not me, not you and not Austin Bob. Seems like Bobby has been butting heads with Ikswobel lately, maybe him? I like him, kind of a big goofball, but someone has to go.”

Ana drew her shortsword as she hugged the tree with one arm, with a quick swing she knocked three coconuts down to Vikky. After sheathing her weapon Ana slid halfway down the tree before jumping down and landing in a three-point stance. “I hope that looked as cool as it felt.”

The two women laughed, embraced and began to walk toward the Camp. During the walk Ana confirmed she was happy with Ikswobel as the plan if the other votes could be pulled together.

Back at Camp Ajax, Ikswobel and Ixora whispered to one another as Austin Bob was restarting the campfire roughly ten feet away.

Ikswobel whispered, “Vikky…? The pair is getting scary this late in the game.”

Ixora and Ajax nodded before getting up as they saw Ana and Vikky in the distance. Ajax offered to help Ana open the coconuts, and as he pressed a quarterstaff into a coconut to break and remove the green shell, he floated the plan, “Hey, Ana… a bunch of us were thinking Vikky, she and Austin are pretty close.”

Ana opened a second coconut and shook her head no, “Think about Ikswobel.”

She looked over to Austin Bob who had just finished speaking with Ixora and was gesturing toward the beach.

After the coconuts had been opened and shared, Ana walked over to the beach to speak with Austin Bob. “Hey, kind of crazy so far… Vikky and I were thinking Ikswobel.”

Austin Bob scratched the back of his neck, “I have no problem sending Ikswobel home, but I think Ixora wants to get you out. I know you two are kind of close, but anyone against us has to go. And if Ixora goes, that protects you, that protects me and it protects Vikky. And then we have numbers and can get rid of the other two whenever we want.”

Ana was initially panicked at hearing her name, then was overcome with sadness and anger hearing that Ixora wanted her out. “I trust you Austin, so I don’t need to try to confirm this and risk our game. Let’s do it, I’ll talk to Vikky. We would need one more.”

Ajax approached the beach to speak with Austin Bob, “Are you two done? I can come back.”

Ana stood up, “No worries, I want to track down Vikky anyways. We were so focused on coconuts we didn’t get a chance to speak much about the Vote.”

Ajax walked over to Austin Bob, but Austin stood up before Ajax was able to sit next to him, “Hey Ajax, I am going to head back to Camp, but it sounds like Ikswobel is the Vote tonight.” Austin trudged back to the fire at Camp.

Moments after Austin had left Ajax wrote “Vikky” in the sand and watched tide wash the name away before he returned to Camp.

As the sun began to set, the Pühl Party gathered together at the center of the Camp. Vikky pulled her hair back, “Ugh, I hate this part of the game… let’s get our Urns and get going I guess.”

Day 13 of the Apex Adventurer Tournament

Split the Party

Strong gusts of wind blew through the Camp as the sun began to rise. Ana decided she would once again prepare breakfast for the Party, but her attempts to restart the fire were ruined by the blustery conditions. She looked back toward the other Adventurers; no one else had gotten up just yet. Anna quietly sat next to the fire pit to wait.

Nearly a half hour later Ikswobel stepped out of his tent and stretched his arms while yawning. Ikswobel began to walk over to Ana to ask if she needed help preparing breakfast, but quickly noticed that she hadn’t started yet. Seeing the lack of fire he knelt down and tried his luck against the gale, “Maybe you could, like, help block the wind and it’ll catch?” Ana obliged. “I am not much of a cook, but once this fire gets going, I will give it a shot.” On the third try the two were able to get a small flame and nurture it to grow into a roaring fire.

Ikswobel began to cut up potatoes. Ana stopped herself from saying that he probably should have rinsed the potatoes first.  Realizing how much it irritated her, she commented. “This game is getting to me… you seem to be the exact same as you were on the first day of the Tournament, how do you do it?”

Ikswobel placed a pan on the fire and casually tossed the potato wedges into it.  About half missed. “Aww, man!” He used a stick to prod the wedges near the edge of the fire so he could quickly pick them up and get them into the pan.

“A little bit of ash won’t hurt. Ana, this is a very complicated tournament there are a lotta ins, a lotta outs. We have to live together, compete against each other, sometimes fight each other and then somehow pick one of us to win a life changing amount of money. Seeing HOBO get demolished in that arena was rough, but that is what we signed up for.”

Ana nodded quietly. Ikswobel continued, “At least it wasn’t two of us going against each other in that Arena, that would be, you know, really bad.”

The other Adventurers joined the pair. As they each claimed a seat near the fire it began to stabilize, no longer dancing side to side as the wind blew through the Camp.

“Ikswobel, thanks for making breakfast,” Austin Bob said as he looked upon his charred and ashy potato wedges. Austin Bob continued, “Hopefully we have some time today to do some fishing, if I catch anything I was thinking I’d make dinner for everyone.”

Vikky excitedly offered to help fish as she did not want to have this breakfast be her only meal for the day. “Honestly, we could just go out now. We probably have a little bit of time to knock out chores before Geoff shows up. What do we all think?”

The Adventurers decided that while Vikky and Austin Bob went fishing, Ajax and Ixora would hunt for crabs while the rest gathered wood and coconuts. After divvying up tasks they all huddled together and shouted “Pühl Party!” before breaking apart into their respective subgroups.

Over the next several hours the Adventurers worked on the tasks they volunteered for, while taking the occasional opportunity to discuss strategy or search for a Godsend. Austin Bob and Vikky returned to Camp while holding a two-foot-long fish by the tail and a bucket filled with several smaller fish. The others heard the pair shouting with excitement as they walked towards the Camp and soon enough the entire Pühl Party was once again sitting around the fire at the center of their Camp.

“Alright, looks like a lot of things are going our way today!” Austin Bob shouted as he held the large fish overhead.

“Don’t even start to pretend like you caught that one!” Vikky shouted.

The entire group laughed before discussing if it made sense to cook a late lunch now instead of waiting to eat the fish for dinner. Vikky began to prepare the fish for cooking once the group unanimously agreed to have them for lunch.

The Adventurers were enjoying their lunch of fish and citrus fruits as Geoff appeared at their Camp. “Wow, looks like you were able to catch quite the fish. Go ahead and finish up your lunch and then meet me over by Altar Mail for today’s Contest.”

The Adventurers finished the rest of their food and quickly cleaned up. As he picked up his adventuring gear Ajax joked, “Watch today’s Prize be food.”

Ikswobel quickly responded, “You know, man, that would be just fine by me!”

The Adventurers walked to Altar Mail and were amazed as they saw Geoff standing in front of large wooden statues that looked exactly like the Adventurers.

“Whoa, looks just like me! Well, if I was eight feet tall.” Ixora exclaimed.

Geoff smiled at the group as he waited for the excitement to die down. “Hey folks, today you will be competing individually in a Prize Contest. You will each privately complete a questionnaire, where you must try to guess the most popular response to the questions. For each question you answer ‘correctly,’ meaning your answer is in the majority, you will use this wand to attack one of the statues with a bolt of fire magic. If your statue is destroyed, you are out of the Contest. The Adventurer whose statue is last to remain standing will be the winner. Today’s winner will choose two others to accompany them on a trip to a local temple where you will have an evening of relaxation and spiritual rejuvenation. In addition, you will be fed a three-course dinner at the temple before heading back to Camp.”

Geoff distributed the questionnaires, “Remember you’re not writing down what you think the answer is, you’re writing down what you think the most people in this group will write down.”

The Adventurers spread out to privately complete their questionnaires. All of the Adventurers, with the exception of Ixora and Ikswobel, completed their surveys within two minutes. After five minutes went by Austin Bob complained that Ikwobel and Ixora were taking too long. “That’s just, like, you know, your opinion, friend!” Ikswobel sniped back.

Soon after, Geoff pressed them to finish up and rejoin the group. As he held the stack of questionnaires in his hands, they suddenly flashed a bright blue, and a moment later a similarly bright blue light appeared in front of each Adventurer. As the light dissipated the stack of questionnaires was replaced by a single sheet of paper and neatly stacked piles of wooden boards appeared on the ground before the Adventurers.

Geoff then said, “Please go ahead and pick up the wooden boards in front of you, keeping them face down. You will reveal them in order as we go through the questions until we have a winner. I have a summary of the most common responses right here. Let’s get started!”

First Question: “Who talks too much?”

Ixora’s statue was the last one standing. Geoff announced, “Congratulations Ixora, you have won today’s Prize Contest! You have won a trip to a local temple where you will spend several hours relaxing and be fed a three-course meal. Which two Adventurers are you choosing to join you?”

Ixora thought for a moment before deciding, “I really wish I could bring everyone, I think everyone deserves it… ugh, I will go with Ana and Austin Bob.” Ixora was quickly joined by Ana and Austin Bob and the trio had a quick group hug to celebrate.

One of the many smaller temples found at the Icosahedron Isles, they seemed to have opted to use up as much of the small island as they could for this one!

Geoff continued, “Alright everyone, no long hike back to Camp this time, no Party Assembly either. Ixora, Ana, Austin, a boat will be coming by shortly to pick you up and take you to the temple and the same boat will bring you back after a few hours. I hope everyone gets some rest as each of you will be competing in a Protection Contest tomorrow.”

Ixora, Ana and Austin Bob enjoyed a relaxing evening at the temple which was situated on a small, nearby island. They enjoyed fresh fruits and coconut water as they relaxed in a salt water pool in the temple. Soft music serenaded the trio as they relaxed. The only strategy they discussed was that they should continue to support each other should any one of them win a Prize or Protection Contest. They eagerly awaited their three-course-dinner, but not the eventual trip back to Camp.

The rest of the Pühl Party spent the evening relaxing near the water. “I guess the good thing is the Camp chores are already done and we ate really well today,” Ajax said to the others.

Vikky stood up from the sand and began to knock sand off her legs with the back of her hand as she walked toward the water, “True, but it still would have been nice to get treated to what sounded like a spa and a massive dinner.”

Ajax replied, “Yeah, well… if one of us wins the next one we could agree to take each other.”

Vikky smiled and said, “If I win and can choose to bring two people along, I’ll do just that.”

Ajax, Ikswobel and Vikky watched the sunset together from the beach before heading back to Camp. Ixora, Ana and Austin Bob rejoined the group roughly an hour after sunset. The Pühl Party spent the next hour quietly huddled around the fire, the group’s energy was noticeably less happy and energetic as it was during their fish lunch earlier in the day.

Day 12 of the Apex Adventurer Tournament

In Spite of a Valiant Effort

“Hey, wake up.” Ana whispered as she gently tapped HOBO’s shoulder. “The two of us should get up and get the fire going for breakfast. Everyone else did a lot of work around Camp yesterday, we need to step up and do more today as a way to say thank you and do our part.”

After a long, loud yawn HOBO sat up and gently rubbed his eyes. “OK, I guess I’ll get start prepping the potatoes if you want to get the fire going.”

The two quietly worked together to prepare a breakfast of potatoes and crab. The pleasant smell woke up the rest of the Pühl Party.

“Wow, that smells good. Hopefully we can catch more crabs soon!” Ajax exclaimed as he warmed his hands at the fire.

The Adventurers devoured their breakfasts as soon as they were plated. “We need to have the two of you on cooking duty more often, that was a great meal!” Ikswobel said as he scraped a couple crumbs together to make sure he completely cleared his plate.

Ixora mentioned she wanted to go for a walk and could check for Altar Mail on the way back. Ana volunteered to go with her as she still felt the need to make up some work around Camp. 

“You can definitely join me, but enough of this needing to make up work. You and HOBO did plenty by getting the fire started and making breakfast. I am happy to call it even.”

After nearly thirty minutes the pair excitedly returned from their walk as they waved a scroll in the air. “We have Altar Mail!” The two then read the message in unison:

Today your goal is to climb to the top

So be sure to move quickly and do not stop

Dodge some boulders along the way

Or risk a painful start to the day

Just as he had the last time the Pühl Party had Altar Mail, Geoff magically appeared before the Adventurers just as the rhyming message had been read. “Alright. Everyone should take a moment to gather whatever you may want for today’s Protection Contest based on the message you just received then we’ll head out.”

Everyone gathered their gear as Ikswobel complained that they do not get much time to prepare following Altar Mail. “That is by design, it rewards Adventurers who are able to think and act quickly,” Geoff retorted.

Once the Adventurers gather near Geoff, he began to lead them on a long hike towards the center of the island. After nearly an hour of walking through dense woods the Adventurers found themselves at a clearing near the base of a mountain. The group instinctively gathered on a red mat placed near the mountain and awaited further instruction from Geoff.

“As you already know, today’s Contest is for Protection.” Geoff recovered the Shield of Protection and held it up for all the Adventurers to see. “Today is going to be a little different though…” Geoff said as he moved his hands apart. The Shield of Protection split into two identical shields. The Adventurers loudly cheered as they realized their chances of winning safety from The Vote just increased.

“Today’s two winners will not only receive a Shield of Protection, each winner will also receive two rubies and a trip into town for some shopping.”

The Adventurers would be wise to not underestimate the many goblins hiding and waiting for the perfect opportunity to strike

Once the second round of cheering had quieted down Geoff went on to describe the competition. “Each individual will race to the finish line at the top of this mountain. As you can see boundaries have been erected on either side of the course, and you must stay within the boundaries for this Contest. In addition to difficult climbing conditions, you will be dodging attacks from Goblins throughout the course. These goblins are not only armed with projectiles, but several are positioned near boulders which they will roll down the mountain with the intent of crushing you. First two Adventurers to cross the finish line will be today’s winners. Austin Bob, at the Apex Adventurer Tournament Bidding War you won an Advantage in today’s Contest, please go ahead and reveal your Advantage.”

Austin Bob proceeded to read aloud the scroll he had won, which stated that he would start the race with a 120-foot lead.

“On my go the race will begin!” Geoff exclaimed. The Adventurers prepared themselves. After a quick countdown from three, Geoff shouted, “Go!”

Vikky and HOBO quickly took the lead as they charged past a spray of arrows fired from the nearby Goblins. Ajax was not satisfied with his initial position in the middle of the pack, so he changed forms into a brown bear and began to gain on the others. Over the next half minute Ajax was able to catch up to Vikky by passing Ikswobel, Ixora and HOBO. As soon as Ajax caught up to Vikky, he noticed a large boulder tumbling towards them both. The boulder narrowly missed Vikky and tumbled down past the leaders. As the boulder approached the other Adventurers, Ana cartwheeled to dodge it, showcasing her acrobatic capabilities. Ikswobel was not fast enough to dodge out of the way and shouted in pain as the boulder clipped his arm and spun him to the ground.

The Adventurers continued to clamber up the mountain side, opting to not engage in combat with one another or the Goblins and focus their energy on climbing and dodging. This strategy went out the window for Vikky as she was hit by a Goblin arrow for the second time. She decided to pause her climb for a moment to fire arrows at the Goblins that had hit her and was able to take out both opponents with one arrow a piece. While initially excited by her quick kills, Vikky shouted out in frustration as Ajax charged past her into a decisive lead.

After a few more seconds, Austin Bob ran past Vikky, who responded by firing an arrow at his feet. Another six seconds passed, which was enough time for Ajax to summit the mountain and claim first place in the race, shortly followed by Austin Bob as the second place finisher.

The remaining Adventurers finished in the following order: Vikky, Ana, Ikswobel, HOBO and Ixora. The Adventurers proudly stood at the top of the mountain, realizing their incredible achievement regardless of what position they finished.

Geoff appeared next to them at the top of the mountain. “Impressive everyone, I did not expect you to all finish this climb so quickly. You should be proud of what you achieved today. Ajax, Austin Bob, an additional congratulations to you for being today’s Contest winners.”

The other Adventurers clapped as Ajax and Austin Bob walked up to Geoff to claim a Shield of Protection as well as two gemstones each. Geoff continued, “I am sure all of you are quite exhausted after climbing this mountain, so I am going to teleport you back to Camp-” the Adventurers cutoff Geoff as they cheered. “This will give you some much needed time to strategize with one another and figure out how you will vote at tonight’s Assembly.”

The Adventurers were teleported to their Camp beach. “Oh wow, the air is so much easier to breath down here.” Ixora exclaimed as she slowly walked towards the water.

“Yeah, no kidding! Also, can we all agree to a short break before we start running around figuring out the Vote?” Ana asked.

The Party agreed and all began to rest on the beach. After ten or so minutes Ajax started to head towards the Camp and said he is ready to chat, HOBO jumped up from the water and said he would like to speak with him for a moment.

“I am safe tonight, did you have someone in mind?” Ajax asked. HOBO, without missing a beat, said he was planning to vote Ikswobel. Ajax said he was open to it before the two parted ways.

Ana was speaking with Ixora and waved Ajax over as he finished speaking with HOBO. Ana revealed that the plan was to vote for HOBO. “I just spoke with Austin Bob and he will let Vikky know.” Ajax and Ixora agreed to the plan.

HOBO saw Vikky speaking with Austin Bob, so he walked up to the two of them. “Congratulations, once again!” Austin Bob thanked HOBO before asking his thoughts on the Vote. “

I was planning to vote for Ikswobel, that work for you?” Austin Bob and Vikky agreed right before Ikswobel walked up to the group.

“Hey, so what is everyone thinking?”

The group said they hadn’t committed to a name yet, but were open to ideas. HOBO said he wanted to check in with Ana and walked away, at which point Ikswobel asked if HOBO was an option, and Austin Bob and Vikky confirmed HOBO was the target for this Assembly.

HOBO walked past Ajax as he made his way toward Ana, at which point Ajax confirmed that the plan was still Ikswobel. Ajax then made his way to Austin Bob, Vikky and Ikswobel to solidify a HOBO vote.

Two hours of back-and-forth discussions continued, where the names most discussed were Ikswobel and HOBO. “Ugh, the sun is starting to set, I think we should grab our Urns and head to the Party Assembly.” Ana shouted.

The beauty of the sunset was lost upon the Adventurers this evening as they remained focused on the Party Assembly

The Pühl Party gathered together at the center of Camp with their Urns and gear before making the journey together to the Assembly Hall where Geoff was waiting.

“Welcome to another Party Assembly, for the first time as a united Party, the Pühl Party.”

The Adventurers loudly clapped and cheered for this welcome.

“Just like the last Vote, the Champions Arena is in play in the event of a tie. Now that we are in the individual portion of the game the Forsaken Arena is now also in play. If any Adventurer receives a majority of the Votes, that player has the option to go to the Forsaken Arena and combat a powerful opponent to the death, where victory would return you to the Tournament and trigger an automatic revote.  During the revote the Arena champion is now Protected from the Vote. An Adventurer who loses in the Forsaken Arena is out of the Tournament and does not earn a spot on the Council of Judgment. If an Adventurer loses in the Arena by dying, we will revive them after declaring a winner to the combat. OK, let’s get to it!

“Welcome back to another Party Assembly. Tonight, we actually have two Adventurers wielding a Shield of Protection who cannot be voted out: Ajax and Austin Bob. Before we get into a discussion on the Contest, would anyone like to comment on how things are going back at Camp?”

“I would say it is chaotic,” Ixora said with a bit of trepidation in her voice.

“Chaotic, so would you say everyone is not united as one Party back at Camp?”

Ajax quickly responded, “I would say it feels like we have seven different Parties back at Camp.”

Ana and Ixora both said, “It is definitely an individual game at this point.”

“Obviously this game is a microcosm of the World and all the planes of existence, does anyone think this reality helps them or hurts them?”

Ikswobel sighed before saying, “I think sometimes it helps me in this game, dude, and sometimes it hurts me in this game. You cannot just play this game without realizing that you are, like, dealing with other people, man. People who, you know, exist outside of this microcosm, to use the parlance of this Assembly. And, like, man, you have to just sort of, you know, realize that.”

Ana added, “I think that was beautifully said. It is a game, but it is also so much more than that.”

HOBO chimed in, “Yeah, you cannot completely separate everything. For example, my old bones hurt.”

“HOBO, do you think your age is affecting you in this Tournament?”

HOBO responded, “I don’t think it is my age that is affecting my Contest performance. On the contrary I think my life experience is advantageous in a lot of cases.”

“That is a great point. So far in the Tournament we have seen a number of demanding Contests which call upon different skills and capabilities in order to excel at them.”

Ajax nodded, “Definitely, I believe my druidic roots and the ability to change form to adapt to the environment have helped me a lot in these Contests.”

Ana interjected by asking, “Ajax, do you think you still would have won today’s Contest if you were unable to turn into a bear?”

Ajax responded, “Probably not. I am somewhat nimble, but I am not particularly strong.”

“So, Ajax, we have now seen you change form a few times now in Contests. Do you think that the strengths you gain from the ability to change form are actually a disadvantage in a game like this?”

Ajax thought for a moment before responding, “I think they are helpful in the Contests, which also makes that ability a disadvantage whenever we come to vote since no one else is able to change form. Doing well puts a target on my back. That said, I have felt like I had a target on my back for a while and so I feel like I am going to need to continue winning to stay in this Tournament.”

HOBO added, “I wanted to say that I feel vulnerable for tonight’s vote as well.”

The other Adventurers all began to mention how they felt concerned for the upcoming vote.

Ixora said, “I feel it would be stupid not to feel vulnerable in the Vote tonight.”

“Turning our focus a little bit, Vikky, today you were the only Adventurer to target the Goblins during the Contest, could you elaborate on that decision? You had the early lead until you decided to engage in some combat.”

Vikky sat up and fixed her posture before responding, “Yeah, the first thing I want to say is that I am really happy that Austin Bob is one of our two winners today. It was great to see him win.”

“Thanks, Vikky!” Austin Bob shouted before she continued with her response to Geoff.

“I was getting frustrated with the Goblins, they hit me a few times and I knew they were hurting my friends as well. I decided it was more important to take out these Goblins and make things a bit safer for everyone even if it meant I had a worse shot at winning the race.”

“Is there anything else we would like to talk about or are we ready for tonight’s vote?”

Austin Bob raised his hand as he began to speak, “Yeah, I just wanted to quickly thank Ana and HOBO. We worked together during the bidding war which ultimately let me earn an Advantage in today’s Contest. This surely played a role in my ability to win and be safe from tonight’s vote. I think all of us, who need to know, have a clear idea of what the plan is.”

“Alright, with that, let’s get to the vote.”

One by one, the Pühl Party members cast their votes and returned to their seats.

Geoff retrieved the Votes as the Adventurers looked on. “OK, the votes have been cast, if you have a Godsend you would like to play, this is the time to do so.” After a brief pause, Geoff nods his head and says, “I will tally the votes.” He pulled the first Vote from the box and read aloud:

“HOBO… four votes are enough, please bring me your Urn.” HOBO quickly walked to his Urn and then to Geoff. “HOBO, the die has been cast. Your adventure ends here.” Geoff then shattered the Urn with a swift blow.

The shards of HOBO’s urn lay on the ground of the Assembly Hall – will he win his way back into the Tournament? … If so, does that mean he gets a new urn?

”As you know, you have an opportunity to regain your spot in this Tournament. Would you like to fight in the Forsaken Arena, risking your spot on the Council of Judgement, for a chance to reenter this game?”

HOBO immediately responded, “Yes! I am fighting in the arena! I am here to win!”

“Alright, HOBO you made the decision to fight in the Forsaken Arena for a chance to stay in this game. That fight will be taking place right now.”

The Adventurers excitedly looked at one another. HOBO nodded his head and responded, “Let’s do this.”

In a dizzying flash the Adventurers went from their seats in the Party Assembly Hall to awkwardly squatting in mid-air inside a warm cave. With their chairs no longer present every Adventurer, with the exception of Ana and Ixora, fell backward onto the ground. As he looked around Austin Bob pointed out that they had appeared in some sort of viewing gallery inside a volcano.

“There they are.” Austin Bob pointed down into a circular arena, where HOBO and Geoff were standing. Moments later Geoff disappeared and in his place was a twelve-foot-tall elemental sprite constructed of massive boulders seemingly interconnected by long, weaving, thorny vines.

As soon as the elemental sprite appeared HOBO ran backward. What initially appeared as a retreat was revealed to be the decision to create enough space for HOBO to cast two powerful spells back-to-back. The Arena filled with a thunderously loud boom, which knocked the sprite backward an inch, six seconds of silence passed, and then another loud boom. The second spell caused the sprite to knock backward before charging toward HOBO to pick him up and smash him into the ground with each of its massive arms. HOBO was bleeding profusely after the first attack and barely breathing after the second slam. The knowledge that HOBO knowingly opted for the Forsaken Arena as well as the fact that he would be revived following his defeat had seemingly no effect on the Adventurers’ spirits as watched him battle his formidable opponent.

As he laid prone on the ground he looked up at the Adventurers and smiled, blood pouring down over his chin. He then turned to his opponent and began to insult it, “I am surprised how little damage you could do considering you are gigantic and made of rocks!”

The insult had seemingly no effect as moment later the sprite slammed down on HOBO, leaving him unmoving in a pool of blood on the ground. The creature slammed HOBO’s unmoving body once more before it disappeared in a purple flash.

The Adventurers stared silently at HOBO’s body laying still in the center of the arena. “Alright everyone, in spite of his valiant effort HOBO has been defeated in the Forsaken Arena and is officially eliminated from the Tournament. As our healers work to revive him, we will teleport you back to Camp.” As soon as Geoff finished addressing the Party they felt an abrupt change in atmosphere, the hard rock surface immediately changed to a soft sand. The Adventurers quietly sat on the beach watching the night sky, each reflecting on what they witnessed in the Arena and what they may well be faced with in the coming days.

Day 11 of the Apex Adventurer Tournament

Ixora woke up shivering early in the morning. “Wow, how is it so cold, I can only imagine how Ajax’s hands must feel right now… oh, we let the fire go out… wonderful.” After completing a few stretches Ixora walked over to the fire pit to get the fire restarted. Ixora place to thin twigs near a glowing ember and began to gently blow until the twigs ignited. She whispered to herself, “oh yay, that wasn’t too bad.” Ixora continued to feed the fire until it was a roaring fire. “Alright, guess Ill go search for some fruit or something. Before Ixora walked into the woods, she woke up Ajax and let him know the fire was going so he could warm up his hands. “Thank you, I really appreciate this. I am annoyed there are still frozen, I can barely do anything with my hands like this.”

As the sun began to rise, the rest of the Adventurers joined Ajax around the fire. Ixora returned to the Camp with a handful of berries and a coconut. “We can add these to breakfast, I went foraging since I couldn’t sleep.” Austin Bob helped Ixora with the food preparation, “I think it is my turn to help cook breakfast, thanks for gathering these for everyone.” Austin Bob began to cut the potatoes, “Ajax, you don’t mind if I use the fire for a while to cook, do you?” Ajax replied, “not at all, Ill help gather wood and see if moving about will help heat my hands up.”

The Pühl Party enjoyed their breakfast of potatoes and fruit as they all huddled near the fire. “This is nice, the warm food and fire to heat us up a bit.” Austin Bob said aloud as he enjoyed his breakfast. Ana agreed, “yeah, it is nice, hopefully we catch some fish or crabs today. We ate our day’s ration of potatoes so anything else we eat will have to be gathered or caught. The group started to discuss their plans for the day, divvying up Camp work.

Geoffrey Toast, a former Adventurer and Tournament Contestant who is now assisting Lord Mittens in running the world-renowned Apex Adventurer Tournament

Late in the afternoon Geoff walked into Camp looking for the Adventurers, he only saw Ajax warming his hands near the fire. “Ajax, could you go ahead and gather the rest of the Pühl Party for me?” Ajax walked to beach to call out to several Adventurers in the water that Geoff was at the Camp. Within a minute all the members of the Pühl Party were gather around Geoff. “Alright, no Altar Mail today – I am here to make the announcement myself.” The Adventurers excitedly looked at one another. Ana asked, “please tell me we are getting the day off and just going to enjoy a feast.” Geoff smiled before responding, “No, afraid not, but each of you will have a chance to eat. Follow me.”

The Adventurers cheered in excitement as they saw a series of wooden chairs, each with a small leather pouch resting on it. Geoff stood behind a large table which was set before the chairs. “Alright everyone, go ahead and take a seat. On your seat you will find a pouch with 500 pieces of silver.” The Adventurers interrupted Geoff with a loud cheer. “Today you will be participating in the Apex Adventurer Bidding War. You will be able to bid your silver in increments of 10 pieces for a variety of items which will go up for auction. Keep in mind that some items will go to the top bidder and others will be split it two or more Adventurers make the maximum bid. Unless stated prior to the bid, no items can be shared between Adventurers. Also, the Bidding War will end without warning, so be sure to bid on anything you may want. Should you have any silver left over at the end of today’s Contest – that is yours to keep. Let’s get started!”

Geoff smiled then gestured at the table before him, as his hand neared the table a plate of two turkey legs and a large glass of ale appeared. All the Adventurers shouted out in excitement.

“Alright, this one goes to Austin Bob, enjoy”

Austin Bob ran up to Geoff, took a large bite out of the turkey leg. “Oh, wow, that was worth every piece of silver. He then took the plate and ale back to his seat.

“Next item up for bid… is going to be kept secret.” A wooden cover appeared on the table as Ixora exclaimed, “seriously, why are you keeping it a secret!”

“Alright Ana, this is yours.” Geoff said as he lifted the cover to reveal a plate with a ribeye steak on it and a healing potion.” Ana took a small bite of the steak before quickly returning to her seat with her items.

“Next item up for bid is a large platter of pulled pork nachos.” The Adventurers all cheered as they saw a giant platter of food before them. “This one is a little different, the winner of the bid is free to share the nachos as they see fit.”

“HOBO, come on down and grab your nachos.” HOBO began to eat at the table, after his fifth chip Geoff asked him to return to his seat so the event could continue.

“Next item up for bid is a little different, you will be bidding to win a shower and a massage.” A glowing purple portal appeared about ten feet off to the side from the table. Inside the portal was a white stone floored spa, the spa had a small pool at the center of the room.

“Congratulations Vikky, you will have access to the spa until this Bidding War is over. You are still in the Contest and can continue to bid on items.” Vikky excitedly ran through the portal.

“Next item up for bid… is going to be kept secret.” A wooden cover appeared on the table as all the Adventurers groaned.

“Congratulations Ikswobel, come on down. Before I give you this item, I am going to give you a choice. Would you like to keep the item you won, or trade it for a different secret item?”

“You know, man, I don’t know what I have or what I could have. So, since I have nothing to base the decision on, I am going to go for it and trade it.”

Geoff smiled before responding, “Alright, here is what you gave up.” Geoff revealed to everyone a bowl containing five Good Berries. “What you actually won will be revealed to you only back at Camp.” Ikswobel was excited about the prospect of winning something excitement and quickly returned to his seat.

Who wouldn’t love some shrimp kabobs and a bowl of coconut rice?

“Next item up for bid is a bowl of coconut rice and two shrimp kabobs.”

“Congratulations Ikswobel, you won yet another bid and this one also has a twist. Ikswobel buried his head in his hands, “like, come on man, does everything have to have a twist?” Before I give you this item, I am going to give you a choice. Would you like to keep this food for yourself, or forfeit this food and Ill give everyone else one shrimp kabob? Ikswobel sighed before responding, “you know, this is cruel game, we are all, like, starving here man. And here you are putting all this food out and then throwing these twists around. I am going to let my friends eat, Ill make the trade.”

The other Adventurers cheered as Ikswobel walked over to them with the platter of shrimp kabobs. Austin Bob ran over to Ikswobel to give him a hug and snatch the largest kabob for himself.

The bidding war continued, with Ajax and Ixora each winning a ruby gemstone for 500 silver, Austin Bob winning an Advantage in the next Protection Contest for 400 gemstones, Ana winning a shopping trip to town for 330 silver and Vikky winning a grilled cheese sandwich for 100 pieces of silver.

“Alright, final item up for bid, a healing potion.” Geoff said as he placed a dark red potion on the table. “I am feeling generous, so I am willing to sell two more potions just like this one at the same price as the highest bid.”

Vikky bid 120 silver pieces before could hear the other Adventurers discussing that they could keep the price low by working together. She won the potion, however, at a price where no one could afford to purchase either of the two remaining potions.

“Alright, that concludes the Apex Adventurer Tournament bidding war. Ana and HOBO, follow me to the carriage which will take you to town for a quick shopping trip. It will take you back to Camp afterwards.” Ana and HOBO quickly walked over as the rest of the Party began their journey back to Camp. The carriage ride to town was mostly quiet, Ana and HOBO only briefly discussed Austin Bob’s Advantage in the next Contest and how they were looking forward to extra time away from Camp. Upon their arrival, HOBO told Ana that he had no gems to spend and would wait for her in the carriage. Ana rolled her eyes, decided it was not worth explaining why she would have preferred to bring someone who actually buy something if she knew, then she ran towards the general store. After a failed negotiation to lower the price, she purchased a healing potion for two gems and ran back to the carriage.

A lot of work went into finding these coconuts, not to mention removing the green shells.

During the walk back to Camp Ikswobel began to ask Austin Bob about the Advantage he earned, however Austin Bob cut off his question and asked the group, “now that they are away for a bit, how is everyone feeling about Ana or HOBO?” Since the bulk of the Party was present, the discussion was circular in nature, shifting back and forth from compliments on their nature and Adventuring skills to how they are threats in the game and should be voted out soon. “Yeah, I completely agree… oh, I can see the Camp. What do we think about doing a bunch of chores today so we can have a lighter day tomorrow? Everyone quickly agreed and broke into two groups, one focused on gathering firewood while the other focused on gathering coconuts and fruit.

Ana and HOBO were brought back to Camp shortly after sunset. “Wow, I cannot believe how much wood and coconuts you all gathered while we were away! HOBO and I can do a little extra work around Camp tomorrow to make up for this” Ana exclaimed as she laid down in the sand. Ixora laid down next to Ana before responding, “Yeah, definitely, I am just glad we finally have a day where we got to eat and didn’t have some exhausting Contest to deal with.” The Adventurers sat around the fire pit and reminisced about the various rewards from the bidding war earlier in the day. “Today really was a great day, makes me a little curious about what Geoff has in store for us tomorrow.” Ikswobel said to the group before heading to his tent. The other Adventurers followed suit, everyone knew they needed as much rest as they could get for whatever Day 12 had in store for them.

Day 10 of the Apex Adventurer Tournament

A Spicy Serenade

Ajax, Ana and Ixora woke up an hour before sunrise. Ajax turned to Ana and Ixora while shivering, “I don’t know about you, but I was so concerned about another seaweed monster attack that I barely slept.”

Ana replied, “Yeah, same here. Also, why are you shivering? It’s pretty warm today and the sun hasn’t even risen yet.”

Ixora agreed that she felt somewhat warm as well. Ajax looked at his hands and noticed they were nearly frostbitten. “Ah, I am freezing, I’m guessing I was cursed by a Godsend. I don’t know why else this could be happening.”

Ana and Ixora grew concerned for Ajax’s wellbeing and began to ponder the possibility of a Godsend being in play. After a couple minutes of silence, Ixora noticed the other Adventurers begin to rise. “Looks like the others are getting up. Let’s get back and help get breakfast started.”

As he grabbed a cooked potato for himself, Austin Bob said, “You know, it is kind of nice to be able to wake up because of the sunrise instead of being ambushed in the night by a monster.”

The others chuckled, but also shared his sentiment, some glancing nervously at the water.  When no sea creature emerged they lounged after breakfast, preparing their bodies for what they assumed would be a grueling individual Contest.

A few hours went by and the Adventurers began to wonder when the Contest would start. Vikky said to the group, “I guess we probably should have done some work earlier today when it was a little cooler. Oh well, maybe we will have a Contest in the water or something like that.”

The Adventurers began to work around Camp, although they did so with minimal effort. It was clear they were each attempting to conserve as much energy as possible. While returning to Camp with a coconut in each hand, Jayne noticed Geoff standing next to their firepit, “Everyone, come on back, Geoff is here!”

The anxious and excited energy within the Party was palpable as the Adventurers scrambled to gather their gear. Once they had all gathered around Geoff near their firepit, he announced that they would be spared a long walk and teleported to the location of today’s Contest. The Adventurers quickly cheered with relief, and as they stopped their shouting and clapping they felt an instantaneous change as the ocean air vanished and was immediately replaced by a stinging, hot and sulfurous air. “Ouch! The floor is so hot, such a hard switch from soft sand to this!” Ixora shouted.

The Adventurers looked around their new surroundings and noticed they were inside a volcano. A series of metal chairs were arranged about thirty feet from the mat they were standing on. “This is a joke, right Geoff? We aren’t actually going to be sitting on the chairs that have been baking in this heat, right?” Austin Bob asked.

Geoff smiled and then responded, “Welcome everyone. As you have already figured out, today’s Contest will challenge your endurance and your constitution: how long can you sit on that heated metal chair before giving up or passing out? This Contest is designed to put you to the test and figure out who your toughest competitors are.”

The Adventurers shot glances at one another, trying to figure out who would be willing to stay on the chair and pass out in the heat and who might drop out early for the benefit of everyone.

Geoff continued, “Are we ready to hear about what you are playing for?”

The Adventurers nodded.

“Today we will be competing for the Shield of Protection, which now grants individual Protection from the Vote. Another aspect to today’s Contest: if you feel safe tonight or simply do not want to endure the searing heat, you could sit out the challenge and enjoy some fresh lemonade from the viewing area instead.” Geoff handed each Adventurer a gold and copper coin. “On the count of three, everyone will reveal one of the two coins, copper means you are competing and gold means you will sit out and enjoy some refreshing lemonade instead.”

Ice cold lemonade to tempt Adventurers away from a chance at Protection from the Vote

The reveal showed that Vikky and Austin Bob opted to sit out, so they quickly walked over to the viewing area. Vikky whispered to Austin, “Yes, I had suspected this spot was magically cooled when I saw the ice hadn’t melted in the lemonade. Also, I am now feeling a bit concerned that no one else sat out.”

Geoff directed the competing Adventurers to walk over to their assigned chair. “On my count, each of you will sit down on your chair. You can get up at any time, the last person who is sitting in their chair and is conscious will be the winner.”

Once the Adventurers looked over to Geoff, he began to count down from three and then shouted, “Go!” The Adventurers simultaneously sat down, many shouted out in pain and the others could be seen grimacing. After mere seconds HOBO, Ana and Ixora all jumped back up from their chairs.

“Gah, that was insanely hot! How is anyone still sitting down?!” HOBO shouted.

After another handful of seconds Jayne stood up from her chair shouting, “Nope, not today. I could do it, but this just isn’t worth it!”

Geoff announced, “Not even ten seconds into the Contest and we are already down to two Adventurers.  It’s Ikswobel versus Ajax!”

Nearly one minute of silence was broken by Ikswobel whispering a few words before he pressed his hand along his back and healing magic brought him some relief. “I can heal a few more times, you sure you want to stick this out?” Ikswobel said to Ajax.

Ajax changed form, maybe a bear could bear the heat better

After a few seconds Ajax responded, “I need this,” and morphed from his humanoid form to that of a brown bear.

Geoff shouted, “Wow, both of our contenders are pulling out all the stops for this Contest!”

Both Ikswobel and Ajax continued to endure through the pain for another minute before Ikswobel cast another spell to cure his wounds. Ikswobel looked over at Ajax in bear form to check for signs of weakness. When Ajax showed no signs of change after twelve seconds, he decided to drink a healing potion he made a few days ago.

The other Adventurers looked on in amazement, several whispering to each other that they were glad they dropped out early.

Ixora turned to Ana and said, “There is no way I would have lasted that long. I do wish I just sat out altogether though at least then I’d have had some lemonade.”

Geoff interrupted their conversation with another outburst, “Ajax just dropped back into human form! Will he change form again or are we soon going to have a winner?”

The Adventurers refocused on the Contest where both Ajax and Ikswobel were clearly anguishing in pain. Both Ajax and Ikswobel cast healing spells on themselves. Ajax shouted to Ikswobel, “That was it, I don’t have the energy to cast any more healing spells!”

Ikswobel replied, “Yeah, same here. May the best Adventurer win!”

Another two minutes went by before Ajax passed out and fell to the ground in front of his chair. As Geoff turned to announce victory for Ikswobel he noticed he was slumped in his chair, having lost consciousness just after Ajax. Austin Bob sprinted over and to pull Ikswobel to the ground where he could recuperate. Ajax and Ikswobel were brought back to consciousness and given a moment to collect themselves in the magically cooled viewing area.

Once sure that the Adventurers were at least somewhat recovered, Geoff made the announcement. “Wow, what a Contest, we had several last mere seconds and then the final two lasted over four minutes! Ikswobel, congratulations on narrowly winning the Shield of Protection.”

Ikswobel walked over to take the Shield from Geoff. “You know, dude, it was a tough battle with Ajax. I think we saw just how capable he is in these Contests.”

Geoff smiled before saying, “I am sure everyone is looking forward to getting out of this heat and having some time to discuss tonight’s Party Assembly.”

As Geoff finished his sentence the Adventurers felt a quick shift in their environment once again. All of the Adventurers ran to the ocean to jump into the cool water. After ten minutes of relaxing the Adventurers looked at one another and agreed that it was time to break into groups and discuss plans for how to vote tonight.

As the Adventurers started to head back toward the Camp Vikky said to the group, “I am going to quickly go out on the water to see if I could get a fish or two for all of us.”

Austin Bob volunteered to join her and soon enough they were out on the water. Vikky said to Austin Bob, “I like talking out here since I don’t have to keep looking over my shoulder. I plan to talk to everyone, but am thinking it has to be Ajax tonight, especially after seeing his Contest performance today.

Austin Bob agreed, “Alright, that can be our plan and we can do a check in if we find out if the others have something else in mind.”

Upon returning to the beach Vikky saw Jayne had just walked back to Camp from the woods, she quickly pulled her aside. “What are you thinking Jayne, I have been hearing Ajax’s name come up.”

Jayne quickly responded, “I’m good with that. I have a vote stealing advantage and today’s Assembly is the last one it is valid for, so I will take Ajax’s vote and use it against him.”

Vikky smiled and hugged Jayne, “Perfect! I won’t say anything about your advantage and see what else I can learn.”

Jayne nodded and told Vikky, “I already told a bunch of folks about the advantage, just don’t let Ajax find out and we are good.”

Austin Bob tracked down HOBO after the quick fishing trip. “Hey, I’m hearing Jayne, but wanted to know what you are thinking.”

HOBO nodded and said, “I personally want Jayne out. That said, I am hearing from Ana and Ixora that they want to get Ajax. On top of that I know he has an advantage that redirects votes, I was there when he bought it. Hard to believe he had enough gems for it! I think Jayne might be safer just so the votes don’t get redirected on us.”

Austin Bob nodded his head, “Alright. I’ll talk to the others. Thanks for the heads up.” Austin Bob ran into Ana on the way back to Camp and the two confirmed that the two names floating around were Ajax and Jayne.

An interesting looking plant found near Camp

Ikswobel spent nearly an hour searching for plants which could be used to make a poison. He was boiling water at camp to make a healing potion and a vial of poison when several Adventurers returned to Camp at the same time. He looked up from his work and whispered to Vikky, Ixora and Ana, “Hey, let’s go for Jayne tonight. That work for all of you?”

Ixora responded, “Wait, what, I am getting so confused. I thought it was Ajax. Now it’s Jayne?”

Ikswobel shrugged his shoulders, “Either of those are fine I guess.”

Jayne saw HOBO collecting coconuts and walked over to him. “Hey, Ajax?”

HOBO nodded, “I am not going for you, so yeah. I am also getting a little nervous about how close Vikky and Austin Bob are, but we can deal with that later.”

The two returned to Camp with an armful of coconuts each. At this point the entire Pühl Party was at Camp. Ana said to everyone, “Looks like maybe another half hour until Party Assembly, I wish it was right now.”

Ajax looked at the others, “Yeah, I know what you are saying, you can feel the nervous energy in the air.”

As the sun began to set the Adventurers knew it was time to gather their Urns and start walking to Party Assembly.

Geoff stood quietly as the Adventurers filed in and found their seats. “For the first time, welcome Pühl Party!”

Ixora and HOBO cheered as the others either clapped or smiled.

“Just yesterday we had our Party Mix, sponsored by Hex Mix: the preferred snacking mix of the Apex Adventurer Tournament. Everyone had the chance to interact with each other and get to know each other over some food and ale. Before we get into the heavier parts of this Assembly, I wanted to talk to all of you about the jolting start to Day 9. What exactly happened, would anyone like to comment?”

Ixora responded flatly, “Sea monster attack.”

Ajax added that the morning started with a slap to the face by some seaweed.

“A sea monster made of seaweed at each camp! Wow! If this had happened after the Party Mix you would definitely have a numbers advantage on aggressive creatures, but were you able to handle it in your smaller groups?”

Austin Bob said, “Yeah, I viewed the monster attack as a sort of prelude, a signal from the game that the Mix was coming. I think it also served as a reminder. We all forgot how dangerous the Icosahedron Isles are.”

“You know, Austin Bob, that is a great way of putting it. As you all may know, I was actually killed when I competed in the Tournament. Of course, the rules have since changed, but it doesn’t change the fact that this is a dangerous place.”

The Adventurers nodded in agreement as they reflected on the events from the previous day.

“So, let’s get into it. We had the Party Mix, does everyone feel like we are one Party?”

Everyone started to talk over each other.

“Whoa, let’s get one person talking at a time, but I was hearing words like together, chaotic, party lines, one team. Is this something where folks are focusing more on personal relationships or is this maybe about who you can beat in upcoming Protection Contests?”

HOBO said, “We are somewhat on our own as it is now an individual game, I don’t want to say the word rift…”

“I would say it is a rift!” Austin Bob interjected, “When you ask someone a question and they avert their eyes or give a non-answer, you have to question your trust in that individual.”

HOBO turns to Austin Bob and says, “That wasn’t my intent, you know what I mean?”

Geoff smiles.

Ajax cut in, “I feel the same way, sometimes you cannot say something because you don’t want to break trust with what you told someone else.”

“I don’t want to shine too much of a spotlight on any one Adventurer, so we will change our focus after one more question: between HOBO and Austin Bob, this might go all the way back to the beginning of this Tournament, is this a Bard versus Bard situation?”

Both HOBO and Austin Bob said their disagreement had nothing to do with their shared profession.

Austin Bob added, “You know, ordinarily after a conversation like the one I had with HOBO I would feel unsafe. But tonight, I am not worried. Not at all.”

“So, obviously, this game is a microcosm of the entire World. There is a reason we brought in Adventurers with different backgrounds, different levels of experience, maybe memberships in different Guilds. With that in mind, I want to take a step back for a second and discuss this additional layer of the bonds that are then formed in the Game. Vikky, you and Austin formed some sort of relationship or bond within the Game, do you feel like you can trust Austin in this Game where there will only be one winner?”

Vikky reflected for four or five seconds then said, “We just has our Party Mix, everything is always in flux, but I feel like I have been able to trust him so far in the Tournament.”

“Alright, I wanted to move the spotlight off of Austin Bob. I know that too much attention could be a bad thing in this Game. I want to actually turn our attention to the Rogues in the Pühl Party. Obviously, the Contests require you to rely on a variety of skills and the skills you need to rely on change from Contest to Contest. That said, it seems that the last several Contests have shown that if you are particularly dexterous you could just charge ahead. Do you feel like you have an advantage in these Contests? Conversely, do you think the perception that you might be a physical threat puts a target on your back?”

Ana responded, “I mean, I think even the Contests that we have done well in we are just making up ground in Contests where we don’t.”

Ixora added, “And there were plenty of Contests where we were at a disadvantage relative to the other Adventurers.”

Ana continued, “Even the last Contest is a great example where we did not have a distinct advantage.”

“You both raise some good points. I don’t actually know, who has held the Shield of Protection the most in this Tournament?”

HOBO said, “I think I might be the person who has had the Shield the most. I have had it twice.”

“So, it sounds like no one has had it many times over just yet, are we feeling like it is a level playing field? Are things about equal?”

HOBO said, “I think the shield is extra powerful when someone can recover some magical energy with it.”

“You’re saying spell casters might be more of a threat over those who do not use magic, especially with the added restorative benefits of the Shield?”

HOBO said, “I didn’t say they were a threat. I think earlier in the Tournament the decisions for who should get the Shield were based more on recovering magical energy than health but that may have shifted now that it is an individual game.”

“Ikswobel and Ajax, I want to focus on the two of you for a moment. Everyone else here either opted to not participate in the Protection Contest or dropped out within twelve seconds. They immediately gave up. The two of you hung in there. I think a Tournament record for that Contest, nearly five minutes total. Sitting on a metal chair inside a volcano, this isn’t about being a strong Adventurer, this is peak Adventurer constitution we are talking about. Do either of you want to talk about what was going through your head during this Contest?”

Ikswobel said, “I am happy to talk about my strategies, man. I would like to say one more thing, I was born in an especially nasty region of Hell. I am able to resist damage from fire pretty well and I have to say, I respect Ajax’s performance.”

“So, Ajax, Ikswobel has this innate immunity or resistance to fire, but you were able to hang in there as someone who grew up in the woods! Care to comment?”

 “Yeah, I obviously relied on my ability to change form into some wild animals, that was able to help me avoid damaging my human form for a couple minutes.”

“Why did you hang in? Did you feel like you needed the Shield of Protection to stay alive in this Tournament or was this due to a desire to win?”

Ajax said, “It started because I nearly went home in the last vote, so obviously I was going to give it whatever I could. I thought I was in good shape, but after seeing Ikswobel resist the pain so well, the competitive part of me kept me going. It was an epic battle.”

Ikswobel added, “I also enjoy an epic battle. This Contest was so perfectly suited to me I felt like that I had to win this one, it was made for me! But more importantly I felt like I was in the dark on the last vote, and that’s not a good feeling.”

“Do either of you regret your decision and wish you instead sat out for some lemonade?”

Ajax immediately replied, “No, I used everything I had and the Contest came within seconds. I’m pretty proud of my decision and my performance.”

“Ok, a question for the entire Pühl Party: who feels vulnerable tonight?”

Everyone except Ikswobel raised their hand.

“Interesting, Austin Bob, you are raising your hand, but confidently said you knew you were safe tonight. Which is it?”

Austin Bob curtly responded, “Oh, I know I am receiving votes tonight and I also know I am not going home, Geoff.”

Ajax said, “Wow, he might be implying he has a Godsend.”

Austin Bob stood up, “Oh yeah, I do, and I know I heard my name tonight… so I will be playing it.”

“Wait!” … Jayne said, “I also have something I want to play.”

The Adventurers looked to each other, again? How many were out there?

Jayne walked up to Geoff and handed him a rolled-up parchment.

A scrolled-up parchment, this Advantage could change the outcome of a close vote

“This is an Advantage in this Game, specifically it allows Jayne to publicly steal a Vote from another Player and today is the last day it could be used in this Tournament. Jayne, who’s Vote will you be stealing?

“Ajax’s,” Jayne quickly replied.

“Very well, Ajax, your vote has been stolen and you will not vote. Jayne, you will cast two votes.”

Austin Bob walked up to Geoff as Jayne returned to her seat, “I am just going to play this now.”

A Godsend from Solaris, the Spirit God of Light

Austin Bob hands Geoff a silver amulet with a yellow diamond in it.

“This… is a Godsend. It is a Godsend from Solaris, the Spirit God of Light. It provides whoever wears it the ability to see in the dark and may be used for Protection from the Vote. You cannot vote for Austin Bob.”

Austin Bob, while walking back to his seat said, “I know Ixora was saying my name and targeting me for tonight’s vote, and I will be targeting her for elimination from this point forward.”

Ixora turned to Austin Bob as he sat down, “That’s a big accusation I’m a little concerned. Who told you I was going for you? I’d be interested in learning why you think that.”

Austin Bob said, “We can talk back at Camp, I have nothing to say right now.”

HOBO said, “Geoff, may I do something?”

Geoff, with a curious look on his face said, “Sure, I guess.”

HOBO began to strum on his lute and sing (to the tune of Take On Me by A-ha):

“So, this is a first for the Tournament! Jayne, you have HOBO serenading the group trying to convince them to vote for you. How does this spicy serenade make you feel?”

Jayne angrily responded, “I am shocked and feel very concerned tonight. I am terrified. I am going to stick with the plan I thought was in place for tonight.”

“Well, after all of that, it is time to vote. Ixora, you are up.”

After all the votes were cast, Geoff collected the voting box. Alright, another interesting Party Assembly so far, I’ll count the votes.

“Wait!” Ajax called out. “I think everyone knows I bought something at the last reward trip to town, and I am going to play it as it is only useful for tonight.”

Ajax walked up to Geoff and handed him another rolled-up parchment.

“This… is an Advantage in the Game and will redirect votes cast for Ajax to another Adventurer.  Ajax, who would you like to redirect your votes to?”

Ajax decided to redirect votes for him to Ana, then reclaimed his seat.

Geoff looked over the group, “I’ll read the votes.”

He then pulled the first vote and read aloud:

“This will count as a vote toward Ana, per the Advantage Ajax played.”

Ajax looked over at Ana, whose focus remained on Geoff.

“The vote is currently tied with two votes for Jayne and two votes for Ana.”

“Jayne, you have received the most votes, bring me your Urn.”

Jayne shook her head as she walked toward her Urn. ”This is ridiculous, you all just do not know what you are doing, big mistake!”

She hastily walked over to Geoff and placed her urn on the designated pedestal. “My allies made a mistake, yes I am a threat in all aspects of this game, but they are in trouble now.”

Geoff waited for Jayne to finish her statement, gave her a curt nod and said, “Jayne, we are in the individual portion of the Tournament, which means Trial by Combat in the Forsaken Arena is in play. Would you like to do battle against a powerful creature for a chance to stay in the game or will you accept the vote, be eliminated from the game and join the Council of Judgment, granting you the power to vote for the winner of Tournament? Bear in mind that if you die in the Forsaken Arena, you will not be revived. Should you win, you will be partially rejuvenated, may receive one or more Prizes and return to the game. We would hold an immediate revote upon your return and no votes may be cast against you during that revote.

Jayne thought carefully then decided she would like to join to Council of Judgment so she can “ensure there is a deserving winner.”

Geoff responded, “Jayne, your decision is final. The die has been cast. Your adventure ends here.”

Geoff swung the ceremonial meteor mace at the Urn, flinging shattered pieces onto the ground. Jayne looked back at the Adventurers, shook her head and walked away.

“Another interesting vote, as we continue with the individual portion of the Tournament, it will be interesting to see how Godsends, the Arenas and alliances come into play.”

The Adventurers made their way back to Camp without speaking a single word. Once back Ixora announced that maybe they should all just talk things through tomorrow, since everyone was exhausted after that Party Assembly.

Day 9 of the Apex Adventurer Tournament

Not Exactly a Pleasant Morning

“Help!” Ana shouted to her Party, who woke up in a daze.

As Ajax jumped to his feet, he saw Ana was trapped under a massive pile of seaweed. The Hauz Party looked to the Ocean and saw a monster made of a tangled mass of seaweed towering above the water, preparing to throw a gigantic ball of the slippery algae at those on the beach.

Ixora ran to Ana and helped pull her out from under the weight of the plants as Ajax charged the monster to attack it. The monster lumbered forward until it reached the shoreline, where it lifted its two massive arms into the air to slam them down on Ajax, smashing him into the ground.

“Ajax!” Ana and Ixora shouted as they ran forward, each throwing two daggers at the monster as they charged. The trio continued to attack the monster whilst dodging its attacks. In time, the Hauz Party realized their attacks were starting to make an impact.

“I’ll distract it, you two try to sneak in a big attack!” Ajax shouted as he ran beside the monster and swung a mace into its side.

Ixora took the opportunity to run to its other side and swing a shortsword at its damaged arm, chopping it off completely. The monster let out a bellowing scream, a terrifying sight as ocean water poured out from its oddly shaped mouth. It then swung its remaining arm at Ana, flinging her back onto the beach.

She struggled to her feet, her entire face and torso covered in blood. “Oh, you are going to pay for that!” Ana charged the monster as both Ajax and Ixora struck at its torso, she leaped up at it and buried her daggers into its forehead.

The monster fell backwards into the bioluminescent water. The three walked back to their beach before turning back to look at the monster they had slain. “That better not have been part of this Game, I hope that doesn’t happen again” Ana said to the other two.

The three sat on the beach and looked out past the monster at the horizon, where the sun had begun to rise above the glowing water.

The Oftyre Party were similarly awoken by a seaweed monster surprise attack moments before dawn. Both Vikky and Jayne were hit by the initial attack from the monster. As they shouted in pain, the entire Party awoke, noticed the giant blob of seaweed and charged at it.

“Fan out, it’s throwing those massive balls of seaweed, fan out!” Austin Bob shouted as he ran forward about ten feet, knelt down and fired a crossbow at the monster’s head.

Vikky replied, “Good idea!” She struggled out from beneath the seaweed, clambered to her feet and ran away from the beach towards the trees. A moment after Vikky disappeared from sight, two arrows emerged from the tree line and both hit the monster in the center of its massive torso.

HOBO stood in place and stared down the monster, taking a moment to study it before he began to hurl insults its way, “I can smell you from over here!”

The mockery appeared to be helpful as the monster missed its next several attacks. As Austin Bob and Vikky continued to fire away at the monster, Jayne ran directly at it and drove her massive cleaver into its torso. After her fourth chop, an entire section of the monster’s torso fell into the water.

Ikswobel ran forward to help Jayne, alternating his mace attacks with Jayne’s cleaver chops. “Uh, you know, just tenderizing it for you!”

The monster swung its arms at both Jayne and Ikswobel, and they endured the pain and continued attacking. As the monster lifted its arms high into the air for a devastating attack, an arrow emerged from the woods hit the monster’s left eye. It bellowed out in pain, taking multiple steps backward before falling into the water. As the Oftyre Party regrouped on the beach, they congratulated each other on their victory.

The Adventurers of both Parties opted to start their day early after the unexpected attack at dawn. Jayne cooked up another exquisite breakfast at the Oftyre Camp, discussing with those around the fire whether there might be more monsters like that as long as the water was glowing with magical energy.

Ikswobel responded, “I really, really hope not. I hope the water goes back to normal, it was only nice the first couple days.”

Austin Bob added, “Well, if any more of those things come for us, we will take them out the same exact way!”

The Hauz Party had a similar discussion as they ate a slightly overcooked potato breakfast. Ixora said to the group, “I’m starving, we need to catch fish soon, hopefully this weird ocean situation clears up.”

As the two groups of Adventurers were cleaning up from their quick breakfast, Geoff appeared before them. “Hello Adventurers, take the next ten minutes to grab your things, anything important to you that you want for the rest of the competition, and follow this map to the marked location.”

The Adventurers cheered at the promise of a Mix, and frantically ran around their Camps gathering their things with an excited and nervous energy.

As the two Parties arrived at the location designated on their maps, they saw the familiar purple and black mats. After the Adventurers had gathered on their Party’s respective mat, they looked to Geoff who was standing before them with his hands on his hips. “Alright everyone, drop your bags, we are Mixed!” The Adventurers excitedly dropped their adventuring gear, streaming off their mats to embrace each other. As the bags hit the ground, some nearly empty at this point, they changed color to a deep red and refilled with basic supplies. The Adventurers picked up their refilled bags and returned to a single red mat which had appeared in place of the purple and black mats.

One of the many delicious treats the Adventurers were able to eat at their fest, a bowl of Hex Mix!

“Congratulations on reaching the Party Mix, this year the Party Mix is sponsored by Hex Mix – the snack which will make any moment magical!”

As soon as Geoff finished speaking, a table appeared behind him, the table was covered with bowls of Hex Mix snack mix, platters of sandwiches, bottles of ale, wine, juices and water. The Adventurers cheered as they ran over to the table.

“I’ll leave you to it, while you all are enjoying the Party Mix feast, think of a name for your new Party and also decide which Camp you would like to stay at for the remainder of the Tournament.”

As the Adventurers chattered and piled food onto their plates, they began to discuss options for a Party name.

“How do we feel about Pühl Party?” Ana asked the group.

After a moment of silence, people began to nod, with both Jayne and Ixora saying they liked that as a name. HOBO and Vikky agreed, and soon enough everyone was smiling at the idea. Austin Bob lifted his glass of wine and loudly said, “OK, great, we are now the Pühl Party!”

Everyone else raised their glass, cheered and then took a drink. Ikswobel, after having a few ales, said, “You, you know, we have been eating a lot and… it doesn’t look like we ate very much!”

The others looked at the table and noticed that it was indeed completely covered with food and drinks.

“Oh wow! Every time we pick something up, a new thing appears – I love that!” Ixora exclaimed as she picked up a turkey sandwich and noticed a new one appear in its place.

She then said to the group, “Oh, we still need to pick a Camp to live at… how do we feel about the Hauz Camp? We have been able to fish and find coconuts pretty easily there.” After a quick deliberation, the group unanimously agreed to live at the original Hauz Party Camp.

Once each Adventurer had finished eating, they stood up and were immediately greeted by Geoff, who returned to inquire about the new Party name and where they chose to live for the remainder of the Tournament.

HOBO replied, “We are now the Pühl Party and will be taking over the original Hauz Party Camp!”

Geoff smiled, “Great! Before you all return to Camp, we have one more thing to take care of.”

The Adventurers looked at each other curiously. Geoff continued, “Now that we have finished enjoying the Party Mix Feast provided by our friends at Hex Mix, it is time for a Prize Contest.”

Austin Bob said, “Geoff, we all ate so much, this has to be a joke!” Geoff smiled again, “Not a joke, make your way to the beach where we will draw for spots and get started.”

Ocean kayaking is no easy task, certainly not when arrows will be flying your way!

The Adventurers slowly made their way to the beach, where they saw a line of kayaks along the shore and colored buoys out in the water.

As the Adventurers gathered together on their new red mat near the shore, they focused their attention on Geoff and the table he was standing next to. “Welcome Pühl Party to the first individual Contest of the Tournament, today we are playing for a Prize.”

Geoff proceeded to place three, large rubies on the wooden table. “In addition to winning these three rubies, the winner will earn a trip to a nearby dock for the opportunity to trade with a merchant. To make things a little more fun, the winner will get to invite two other Adventurers to join them for this little trip.” Several Adventurers appeared excited for the opportunity to earn and spend some gemstones. Geoff continued, “OK, this is how today’s Contest is going to work. Each of you will kayak 300 feet out to a buoy, then swim down to retrieve a small key. After retrieving your key, you will kayak back to shore. To make things a little more interesting for this first portion of the Contest, there are several surfing Orcs and Goblins that have been instructed to fire arrows at you. While you do not have to do combat against these surfers, you may do so if you wish. Once back on the beach, you will run thirty feet to your designated chest and use the retrieved key to unlock it. Inside the chest are puzzle pieces which you will use to spell out ‘Apex Adventurer.’ After completing the puzzle, simply run another thirty feet to cross the finish line. The first to cross the finish line is the winner.”

Geoff took a step forward before stopping himself, “Oh, I almost forgot… one more thing about today’s Contest. If you are feeling comfortable or not interested in potentially winning some spending gems and a chance to do a little shopping, you could opt to sit out for a little bit of food.” As Geoff finished talking, a plate of deli sandwiches and a side of potato chips appeared on the small table. Ikswobel and Ixora opted to sit out of the Contest, each grabbing a plate of food and moving toward the designated “sit out” bench. The remaining Adventurers signaled to Geoff that they were ready to start. Geoff counted down from three and then shouted, “Go!” Austin Bob and Ajax claimed an early lead while Ana, HOBO and Jayne all struggled to move more than a few feet as the Contest got underway. After a half minute of rowing, Ajax and Austin Bob reached their buoys and dove into the water. Ana and Jayne arrived seconds later, as both rowed aggressively to catch up to the frontrunners.

Just here to make things difficult on our Adventurers, the surfing Orcs of the Icosahedron Isles are highly skilled at both surfing and archery, be careful.

HOBO and Vikky were falling out of the contest and opted to instead focus on attacking the surfing monsters that were firing arrows at the kayaks, so far to no avail. Ajax was first to retrieve his key and start rowing back to shore when he was hit in the back by an arrow. He ignored the pain and continued to row.

Austin Bob and Ana were next to retrieve their keys. Before Jayne had the opportunity to dive into the water, she was hit by two arrows. “Gah, you will pay for that!” she shouted, as she shot her gaze at the nearest surfing Orc, the creature immediately caught fire and began to shout before jumping into the water.

When the Adventurers were as far from the beach as possible, Ixora stretched out on the platform so she could cautiously peer around the sit out bench. She spotted a small piece of parchment tucked under the bench, so she waited for Ikswobel to be distracted by his sandwich and the action in the competition before carefully retrieving it without alerting him. 

Meanwhile Austin Bob was able to overtake Ajax on the trip back to shore and started on his puzzle after quickly opening his chest of puzzle pieces. As Ana unlocked her chest, she looked up and saw that Ajax had just finished his puzzle and Austin Bob was frantically trying to catch up. Austin Bob cursed and knocked several puzzle pieces to the ground as Ajax crossed the finish line.

Sparkle, sparkle – three more gemstones for one lucky Adventurer to use for a little shopping

Geoff gave the Adventurers some time to regroup on the red mat. “Congratulations Ajax, on winning this Prize Contest! You have won these three rubies as well as the opportunity to do some shopping at a nearby dock where a few merchants are waiting for you. You are able to invite two other Adventurers to join you, who are you inviting?”

Ajax took a moment to think over the decision, “I know HOBO was hoping to spend some gems, so I will bring HOBO with me. And I like having Ikswobel around, so I’ll invite him as my second guest.”

Geoff replied, “OK, here are your gems. Ajax, Ikswobel, HOBO… go ahead and follow the beach to the East where a small boat is waiting to take you to the dock. After you are done shopping, the same boat will take you back to Camp.”

Ajax, HOBO and Ikswobel made their way to the small boat and after a short trip they found themselves at a dock where two large ships were offloading a considerable amount of cargo. The trio saw a cluster of wooden stands on the shoreline near the dock and quickly ran over, excited to see if they could purchase something to help them in the Tournament.

Ikswobel asked the merchants if they had anything to help him recover any magic. After some negotiating, Ikswobel paid a merchant five gemstones in exchange for a salve which had to be applied immediately.  As soon as he touched it, he began to feel his magical energy return to him.

HOBO opted to buy a healing potion for a single gemstone. He was granted a steep discount as the merchant identified that the trio was prepared to splurge during their visit.

Ajax inquired if any Advantages or Godsends were available for purchase. One merchant came forward from the shadows and smiled. She said she would be able to sell a Godsend which would provide Protection from the Vote for 15 gems, which Ajax said he could not afford. She also offered two Advantages at steep discounts as they had to be used at the next Party Assembly. She offered a Steal A Vote for three gems, or a Vote Redirect for five gems. Ajax knew he was at risk of getting voted out and purchased the Vote Redirect. “This seems more powerful than a Godsend, why is it so cheap?”

The merchant replied, “Not only does this Advantage need to be played at the next Party Assembly, a redirect does not guarantee safety and does not apply to a revote. It may only be used during the first vote of the Assembly.” After understanding the caveats, Ajax still agreed to make the purchase.

Back at the Pühl Party Camp the other Adventurers continued to get to know each other as they worked to gather firewood, catch fish and gather coconuts and fruit. As he dropped a massive pile of wood onto the ground near the firepit Austin Bob said, “I think we should leave a little work for them, just because they won a Prize doesn’t mean they get out of work around Camp for the day.”

Several of the others agreed and slowed their pace on the chores. After Jayne added several large coconuts to a communal pile, Ixora said, “I am going to go for a walk and grab some water on the way back.”

Ixora made sure she was alone in the woods before opening the paper scroll, she found at the previous challenge sit out bench. The piece of paper was a simple map which showed the Camp, the beach and some notable landmarks. At the top of the paper was written:

Dig exactly halfway between the firepit and water well.

There you will find a box of food and potions to help you in this Tournament.

Ixora thought to herself, “Oh sweet!  But now isn’t the best time to grab this. I’ll just fill my canteen and get back so no one suspects anything.”

The Pühl Party was lounging on the beach as Ixora returned to Camp. She slyly slipped her clue into her bag before joining the others by the water. “Oh wow, the seaweed has mostly washed away. I wonder if the water will still glow green and blue as it gets darker.”

Vikky looked at Ixora as she laid in the water, “I hope so, it was mesmerizing to watch.”

After another hour of relaxation, they noticed a small boat approaching their beach. “It’s them, they are back!” Jayne shouted, as she pointed out at the boat.

The trio which had gone on a shopping trip rejoined the group on the beach.

Austin Bob said, “Good to have you back, just so you know, we left you a few chores to take care of.”

The trio laughed, but also sensed he was not joking. Ajax, Ikswobel and HOBO all said they would take care of the work in the morning. The Pühl Party sat in silence for several minutes before the chatter picked up again as the sun began to set.

The Adventurers quickly noticed that the glowing colors of the water were much subdued as compared to the last few days. Ana, while staring out at the sunset, said, “This might be the last night we get to enjoy the bioluminescent glow, at this rate we will not get to see it tomorrow.”

Day 8 of the Apex Adventurer Tournament

Seems Like the Choice Was Obvious All Along

Eager for a moment to relax on his own, Ikswobel woke up before the rest of the Oftyre Party. He whispered to himself, “It will be nice to have a few minutes to myself, breathing in some of that sweet smelling ocean air before this day really gets started. As he walked toward the water, watching the blue and green glow rippling through the waves, he noticed that the pleasant fragrance he was expecting had been replaced by a pungent, repulsive smell. “Gah, what is this, it’s like rancid meat or something, man.”

He walked to the water’s edge where he noticed large clumps of seaweed in several spots along the shoreline. He soon realized he was not going to have a pleasant moment to relax, and instead returned to Camp and laid in the hammock until the others awoke to get started with breakfast.

Shortly after sunrise the rest of the Oftyre Camp awoke and gathered near the central firepit. Ikswobel filled them in on what he observed earlier and the group shared his frustration and confusion about the loss of the pleasant ocean fragrance and the piles of seaweed amassing on their beach.

Vikky said, “At least the water is still beautiful to look at, although the colorful glow is really hard to see against the sunlight, hopefully we can get a better view in the evening.”

The Hauz Party noticed the same changes at their beach, which prompted them to spend their morning discussing what the underlying cause might be and if there was reason to be concerned. As she prepared breakfast for the team, Ixora asked, “Maybe we should pass on catching and eating fish until things are more normal with the water, what do you think?”

The Hauz Party quickly agreed to focus on gathering fruits and attempting hunt on the island for additional food, at least until the pungent smell dissipated. As the group finished breakfast Ajax and Dr. Bash offered to check for Altar Mail.

Upon their return, Ajax and Dr. Bash read the Altar Mail to their teammates in unison:

Be prepared for climbing and lifting

And to combat birds of flame

You must make a wise decision

Or risk losing today’s game

Moments after the pair shared the rhyming message with their fellow Adventurers Geoff appeared at the Hauz Camp. “Alright Adventurers, take a moment to gather whatever gear you may want for today’s Contest and then we will head out.”

The Hauz Party quickly gathered their adventuring gear and began to follow Geoff.

Similarly, the Oftyre Party was greeted by their Geoff after they read the Altar Mail.

“Alright, man! I was hoping you would walk with us to the Contests again!” Said a grinning Ikswobel.

After flashing a big smile, Geoff told them to gather their adventuring gear and to follow him. Both Parties arrived at the Contest location at the same time. They realized it was a familiar spot: a section of beach roughly the same distance between their two Camps. The two Parties gathered on their respective colored mats.

Once the Adventurers had settled in, Geoff said ‘’Hey Adventurers! As you already know today’s Contest is for group Protection from the Vote.”

Austin Bob interrupted, “You know, you could have placed the mats a bit further from the water – it stinks Geoff!”

The Adventurers all laughed at the remark. After a few seconds of silence Geoff smiled, “Well, at least there is no swimming component today.” His retort was met with relieved faces and murmurs of appreciation before the Adventurers settled to hear Geoff describe the Contest. “In addition to the Banner of Victory and Shield of Protection, the winning team will receive a trip to a spa for some rejuvenation.” All the Adventurers excitedly cheered that a Prize was also at stake at the Contest.

Yet another creature exclusive to the Icosahedron Isles, the Flame-ingo, beware

“Here is how today’s Contest works. Each Party will choose one person who will climb a twenty-foot rope, after the climb they will drop a rope ladder for the rest of the Party to climb. Once at the top, everyone will cross a narrow balance beam and then slide down a rope before advancing to the next section. Alternatively, you could opt to run across the bed of hot coals underneath the balance beam and skip the ropes and balance beam altogether. Once across, everyone will work together to carry three chests across the thirty-foot long platform. These chests are very heavy and will require two or more people to move them. After the chests are moved, everyone will advance to the sand pit where you will do combat against a creature unique to these Isles: the Flame-ingo. After the Flame-ingos are defeated, the Party will run to the next section, where you will complete one of two combat scenarios. You will do combat against either one Horse-Sized Duck Construct or 100 Duck-Sized Horse Constructs. You will choose which scenario you would like to face before we start the Contest. After the Construct combat is complete, simply run across the finish line – the first Party to have every member cross the finish line wins.”

After explaining the Contest rules, Geoff asked the Oftyre Party which Adventurer would sit out of the Contest as the teams were uneven. They unanimously agreed to have Jayne sit out. Next, Geoff handed each Party two painted stones, one was a dark green and the other was a light blue. “Take a minute to discuss which Construct combat you would like to face, once both Parties are prepared, I will do a countdown and both Parties will reveal their choice at the same time. The green stone will represent the Horse-Sized Duck and the blue stone will represent the 100 duck-sized horses.”

Both groups of Adventurers whispered amongst themselves and within ten seconds both groups were silent and facing Geoff. “Looks like we have our decisions, quickly too.”

He proceeded to count down from three. Ana, for the Hauz Party, and Ikswobel, for the Oftyre Party, both revealed green stones. “Alright, both Parties will be facing a single Horse-Sized Duck Construct today.”

A hot bed of coals, will the Adventurers let a little pain stand between them and victory?

“Is everybody ready?!” Geoff exclaimed. The Adventurers shouted back, some gave a thumbs up or waved to indicate they were prepared. After a quick countdown from three, Geoff shouted, “Go!”

Both the Oftyre and Hauz Party sprinted forward, every Adventurer ran right past the hanging rope opting to instead endure the pain of running through the bed of hot coals. Geoff shouted, “Wow, not a single person opted to spend the time to move forward safely, everyone choose to run through the bed of hot coals!”

Their shoes slightly singed from the hot coals, the Adventurers began to lift the heavy chests and carry them across the 30-foot-wide platform.

“Wow, this is heavy!” Exclaimed Vikky as she let go of the handle on her side, letting the chest slam into the ground with a loud thud.

“Pick it up, we can’t fall behind!” Shouted Austin Bob.

A really, really heavy chest. Best of luck lifting this one.

Vikky took a deep breath, pulled up on the handle and the two continued to walk the chest across the platform. As Ikswobel and HOBO ran the third chest across for the Oftyre Party, they saw Dr. Bash carry the Hauz Party’s final chest across on his own. “This is the last one, let’s go!” Dr. Bash shouted at his team.

The Hauz Party reached their sand pit and started combat a few seconds before the Oftyre Party. Geoff ran forward to keep pace with Adventurers and shouted out, “Both Parties have reached the combat portion of the Contest at nearly the same time!”

The Hauz Party capitalized on their small lead, Dr. Bash charged forward and jabbed his spear at one of the two Flame-ingos in the sand pit, wounding it heavily. Ixora dashed forward to leap at the second Flame-ingo, and was able to slice its neck as it focused its attention on Dr. Bash. Ixora followed up this attack with a fatal dagger strike at the Flame-ingo Dr. Bash injured. In a flash Ixora had struck down both creatures. “Let’s go!” Ixora shouted to her team.

“What?! How are they doing this!” Ikswobel shouted as he jogged into the sand pit.

Ikswobel swung his mace and missed. HOBO viciously mocked one Flame-ingo as Austin did the same to the other. “It’s ok guys, we are not going to lose any time here!” Vikky exclaimed. She rapidly fired two arrows from her bow, striking and killing both Flame-ingos. “Awesome, let’s keep moving – we can win this!” Ikswobel shouted.

A horse-sized duck construct – the decision was made, time for the Adventurers to get to work

The Oftyre Party reached their Horse-sized Duck Construct moments after the Hauz Party. HOBO shouted to his team, “This is where we will be able to overtake them!”

 HOBO then looked over to Ajax and cast a spell on him, causing Ajax to drop to the ground and laugh incessantly; it was a hideous sight.

Austin Bob responded to HOBO, “Oh, yeah, we aren’t losing today – here is a little more Bardic magic!” He then rapidly strummed on his guitar, a small red bead of magic formed before him, with each strum it grew in size until he struck his final chord to propel it directly at the Construct. As the red glowing bead crashed into the construct, the bead exploded into a small cloud of dust. A moment later a loud boom emanated from the point the bead hit the Construct, immediately forming large cracks in the duck statue.

“Vikky, finish this!” Austin Bob shouted.

Vikky fired an arrow at the Construct, knocking the left wing off the statue with a well-aimed arrow. She then looked over at the Hauz Party as she pulled another arrow from her quiver, seeing Ana and Ixora slashing shortswords at the base of the nearly undamaged Construct. Vikky smiled, turned her attention back at her target and fired another shot, this time at center mass. The arrowhead buried in the chest of the statue and caused many new cracks to spawn from the large cracks created by Austin Bob’s spell. Ikswobel charged forward and swung his mace into the statue, his upward swing knocked the bill of the horse-sized duck clean off, the body collapsing completely moments later.

The Oftyre Party sprinted forward, running past the debris from the Construct and across the finish line. They jumped up and down, shouting with joy and then embraced each other. The Hauz Party silently walked toward the finish line, their frustration was clearly seen on their faces.

“Oftyre Party, once again, congratulations on your win. Take a moment to discuss and then let me know who will wield the Shield of Protection.” After a quick discussion, HOBO walked forward to claim the Shield of Protection for himself and the Banner of Protection for his team.

An exquisite spa, a chance to relax and rejuvenate for the lucky winners

“A boat will come pick you up and take you to a spa for some rejuvenation. Afterwards the same boat will return you to Camp. Hauz Party, another tough loss, I have nothing for you so go ahead and start walking back to your Camp.”

The Hauz Party were nearly halfway back to their Camp before they broke their silence, Ana complained to the group, “This stinks, I hate that we keep losing the Protection Contests.”

Ixora added, “It definitely stinks, almost as bad as this water.”

The Party chuckled, but the joke did little to raise their spirits, they knew another one of their Party would be out of the Tournament in a matter of hours. As they reached their Camp, the four stood in a circle around their firepit, which was filled with ash and a few, blinking embers.

“Alright, obviously everyone wants to talk to everyone, should we just break into pairs and switch things up every few minutes?” Ixora asked the group, to which everyone agreed and broke off to strategize.

Ixora and Ajax walked off into the woods, leaving Ana and Dr. Bash to discuss at the Camp. “I mean, it has to be Ajax right, he has some strong magic powers, he has that amulet to make him tougher now and he is really smart,” Dr. Bash said to Ana as she nodded along.

“Yeah, I mean I am definitely not going to write your name down and I know you won’t right mine down. I don’t want to send anyone home, you know.”

“Who do you want to vote out?” Ixora asked Ajax after looking over her shoulder to make sure they were alone.

“Ana,” Ajax quickly responded.

After taking a few seconds to think it over, Ixora responded, “Yeah, I mean she is really helpful in Contests and at Camp, but maybe the Party Mix is coming – is that what you are thinking?”

Ajax confirmed that his vote for Ana was based on a belief that the Tournament would soon become an individual game and that Ana is a fierce competitor.

The pairs switched, giving Ana and Ixora a chance to talk and the same for Ajax and Dr. Bash. It was clear at Camp that the names being discussed for the Vote were primarily Ajax and Ana.

“Do you think either of them have a Godsend?” Ajax asked Dr. Bash.

“If they do, I don’t know anything about it… they better not!”

The Oftyre Party had a much more enjoyable afternoon, spending their time relaxing at a spa on one of the nearby islands. “Ahh, now this is what I am talking about – this hot spring is so relaxing!” Ikswobel loudly stated as he sipped on lemonade.

“I think the water is magical, sort of like the ocean water was.” HOBO said as he saw his scrapes and bruises wash away under the spring water.

“Guys, get over here and eat some of this food for me, we can always jump back in the hot spring later.” Vikky called out to her teammates as she tossed a grape into her mouth. The group spent several hours relaxing before Geoff notified them that it was time to take the boat back to Camp.

As the Sun began to set a Geoff appeared at each Camp. “Alright folks, it is time to collect your Urns and make your way to the Party Assembly.”

“Oh wow, I wish we had more time!” Ana exclaimed as she ran to grab her Urn. The four made their way towards the Assembly Hall, it was another quiet walk for the Hauz Party. The Oftyre Party had a more pleasant walk as they were discussing their favorite aspects of their spa treatment as opposed to wondering who might be getting voted out of the Tournament.

The colorful glow of the ocean gave the walk to Party Assembly a semblance of calm and beauty

“And another awesome thing, look, it is dark enough that we can see the colorful lights in the water again!” Ikswobel said as he led the Oftyre Party towards the Assembly Hall.

As the Hauz Party staggered into the room, they took notice of the smiling Oftyre Party, who were refreshed, clean and free of cuts and bruises. There was a stark contrast in the appearance of the Adventurers, and the same could be said of their disposition.

Once everyone was settled in their seats, Geoff addressed the room. “Welcome to another Party Assembly. Oftyre Party, once again, you are safe from the Vote tonight. As for you Hauz Party, we will talk a bit before we get to the Vote. Just like the last Vote, the Champions Arena is in play in the event of a tie, but the Forsaken Arena continues to be out of play at this point in the game. If any Adventurer receives a majority of the Votes, that player is out of the game.

“OK, let’s get to it. Alright folks, welcome back to another Party Assembly. Oftyre Party, you scored a win today, would you like to say anything about how things are going in this Tournament?”

Ikswobel responded, “I think things are going swell man, team morale is strong.”

HOBO added, “I mean, it is tough obviously, the Hauz Party is good and you cannot go into any Contest assuming you are going to win.”

“So, HOBO and Austin Bob, when we started off in this Tournament, I sensed what could be described as animosity between you two Bards. And now you are on the same Party and it seems like you are meshing really well… so, what exactly is going on?”

Austin Bob replied, “You know, it just took me a minute to realize that it takes two to make a thing go right.”

“I love it, I love it. Speaking of love, although maybe it is too strong of a word, Austin Bob and Vikky… is there something between you two that is more than just an alliance or friendship within the game?”

Vikky replied, “I am not complaining on winning Contests with Bobby, could be worse.”

“So is there something real there Vikky, or is it mostly gameplay? You don’t have to answer, but I am curious and I am sure the other Adventurers are too”

Vikky smiled, “Like I said, its not bad spending time with Austin Bob in this Tournament.”

“OK, let’s switch gears and hear from the Hauz Party. Before we get into some of the finer details, we obviously have a very pressing vote coming our way, I think we finally got an answer to the question of if it is better to fight one horse-sized duck or 100 duck-sized horses.”

Ixora chimed in, “Do we really have an answer, since no one chose the 100 duck-sized horses?”

“Because both Parties quickly chose the Horse-Sized Duck it seems like the choice was obvious all along.”

Ajax then responded, “We thought about it tactically and we knew we couldn’t attack a lot of different targets in a small amount of time.”

“So, that is an interesting point you bring up, a big difference between the current Oftyre and Hauz Parties is that the Oftyre Party seems to have more Adventurers who can utilize magic in combat. And on the flip side, the Hauz Party seems to be able to handle the more physical tasks more proficiently. Do you think this difference is an advantage or disadvantage for the Hauz Party? Or does it not really have an impact on the Contests?”

Dr. Bash answered Geoff’s question by saying, “Honestly, I think we have a very balanced team in terms of magical abilities and physical prowess. It did not pan out for us today, but I think having a balanced team will help us in the long run on the Contests.”

“Let’s turn our attention to the Vote. What is tonight’s vote about? Is it about Party strength and making sure you can go into the next Contest with a bit of an edge or is it about taking out a strong contender to give yourself the best chance when it eventually becomes an individual game?”

Ajax chimed in, “I think its actually about the individual relationships, if a Party Mix is coming, it really matters how close are you with the other Adventurers.”

Dr. Bash added, “It is a difficult decision either way, and you just have to go with your gut. Ultimately it is about putting yourself in a position to win the game.”

“I know we are eager to get the Vote, but before we get there, what are we thinking about Godsends? Do we think they are in play?”

“We know they are in play.” Several Adventurers responded, nearly in unison.

Ana added, “We know they are out there since earlier in the Tournament, Jayne was blinded by a Godsend ability.”

“Let me be more specific, do we think there is a chance any Godsends will be played tonight?”

Ixora responded, “I have no idea.”

After which Ajax, Dr. Bash and Ana all added that they were unsure or that it was hard to tell.

“Alright, is there anything else we want to talk about or are we ready to vote?”

Ajax raised his hand then said, “I haven’t heard much of a discussion around voting for Ixora, so I think she is the most safe of us all. So, I am curious Ixora if you wanted to share what you were thinking for tonight’s vote?”

Ixora looked at Ajax and responded, “I was feeling safe until you pointed that out that no one was targeting me… so thanks for that. I don’t really have much advice, trust your gut.”

“Raise your hand if you feel safe tonight.”

No one raised their hand.

“Wow, this is in sharp contrast to the last time, where every member of the Hauz Party felt safe. Alright, with that, let’s get to the vote.”

One by one, the Hauz Party members cast their votes and returned to their seats.

Geoff retrieved the Votes as the Hauz Party nervously watched. “OK, all the votes have been cast, if you have a Godsend you would like to play, this is the time to do so.”

After a brief pause, Geoff nodded his head and said, “I will tally the vo-”

Ajax shouted, “Wait!” and walked over to Geoff and handed him an amulet with an orange gemstone surrounded by small grey stones. Geoff took the amulet from him and examined in under the torch light.

A Godsend from Ormuzelo, Spirit God of Stone

“This… is a Godsend. It is a Godsend from Ormuzelo, the Spirit God of Stone. It provides whoever wears it an increase in durability and may be used for Protection from the Vote. Votes cast against Ajax will not count.”

As soon as Ajax sat back down, Ana stood up, “I would also like to play something.”

Adventurers of both Parties began to shout out of excitement from the unexpected situation.

Ana walked over to Geoff and handed him an amulet with a green gemstone at the center, surrounded by gold metal fashioned to look like vines. Like with Ajax’s Geoff took the amulet and examined it.

A Godsend from Janumitra, Spirit God of Plants

“This… is also a Godsend. It is a Godsend from Janumitra, the Spirit God of Plants. It provides the wearer two Goodberries a day and may be used for Protection from the Vote. Votes cast against Ana will not count.

Before Ana returned to her seat, Ixora jumped up and said, “I wasn’t planning on doing this today, but I have to play this since I do not want to go home.”

Ixora walked over to Geoff and handed him a ring made of silver with a black diamond on it.

Geoff held the ring in front of him, the other Adventurers not sure if it was a ruse while he examined it.

A Godsend from Zevarus, the Spirit God of Darkness

“This… is also a Godsend. It is a Godsend from Zevarus, the Spirit God of Darkness. It was used to blind Jayne and may be used for Protection from the Vote. Votes case against Ixora will not count.

“So, we have an interesting situation now. Three of the four Hauz Party members are now protected from the Vote, which means it does not matter how the votes were cast. Since Dr. Bash is the only one without Protection, he is effectively voted out of the Tournament.”

 “Dr. Bash, although you did not receive any Votes, you are the only one without Protection, bring me your Urn.”

Dr. Bash picked up his Urn and as he walked towards Geoff, he addressed the other Adventurers, “I… I just have to come clean and tell you that I am not a dentist, I am a Physical Education teacher.”

The Adventurers looked around in confusion at his tearful confession and awkwardly reassured him that being a Physical Education teacher was just a good a profession. With this news off his chest Bash turned back to Geoff to face his fate.

Geoff gave Bash a curt nod as he said, “Bash, the die has been cast. Your adventure ends here.” Geoff then lifted the mace and swung it swiftly to shatter the Urn. Bash looked at the pieces of ceramic on the ground before he looked back at the Hauz Party. After a quick wave, he turned and walked away, hiding his tears from the others. Geoff turned back to the remaining Adventurers, “Wow, this is the wildest Party Assembly we have had yet, and we still have a way to go in this Tournament. Go ahead and head back to Camp and get ready for Day 9 of the Tournament of the Apex Adventurer.”
